Two weeks ago I fished Lock 22 from my boat, and had a mess of a time with the shallow water. I have a cartopper (13ft. boat with trolling motor) and I was hitting bottom with my prop all the time. I had fished this area last year and never hit the bottom.
Anyway, went up and down about a mile and didn't catch anything until I anchored in about 6 - 8 feet of water on the east side of a whistle/tube. Fished with minnows and crawlers with bobbers and off of the bottom. Caught about half a dozen walleyes under 11 inches, a couple of bluegill, and a mess of sheepshead. One had to go over 7 lbs. That was a fight on 6 lb test and an ultralight spinning reel. It was fun, but the shallowness everywhere else was irritating. One funny thing did happen which might make you chuckle so I'll share it.
I had just cast my $8 top water bait and it got away from me and snagged a huge deadfall on the shore. Being the cheap guy that I am, and having new braided line on my pole which I paid $25 to have put on, I did not want to cut it loose. I wanted to retrieve it. My 85 year old dad and 13 year old son told me to forget about it. Nope. I got over to the shore but couldn't get close enough in my boat because the water was less than a foot deep and lots of logs on the bottom nicking my prop. So I thought, what the heck, I'm wearing shorts and sandals, I'll step into the canal and walk about 2 feet to get my lure. When I stepped off the boat with my left leg into the canal, my foot got lodged between two logs and I sunk in up to my waist. Now picture this. My right leg is still in the boat, and crotch is on the side of the boat. A little pain going on there. So I kick my right leg out of the boat, knock my $250 baitcaster that I was using and a $200 spinning combo into the canal. Not to mention that now my right foot is stuck in the mud and I am up to my waist with both legs stuck. Did I mention my wallet and keys were in my pocket. Yep. Awesome. After some wriggling around, I was able to get my right foot ontop of a log and pull my foot out from between the two logs. Got my poles out of the water and back into the boat. Got my topwater bait unsnagged, but when doing so, I embedded two of the hooks from one of the treble hooks into my thumb. This whole time my Dad and kid are laughing like crazy. I got back into the boat, soaking wet, smelling like canal bottom, my thumb was throbbing and bleeding, my poles and reels are dripping wet, my wallet and keys are soaked, and this was only an hour into our 6 hour planned trip.
Moral of the story?.........Nope, not what you are thinking which is probably cut the line and forget about it. The moral is let your kid jump in and retrieve it.
