An interesting question came up with my boys while riding in the truck. In a fight who would win Black Bear VS Cougar?  The boys sided with the Black Bear due to its size. Myself went with the speed and agility of the cat.

Well there you have it, mystery solved...

The cougar ran away - knew the bear would take care of business...

They'd rarely fight in the wild, but a black bear would probably win. They're bigger by about 50% (200 lb for cougar, 300 lb for black bears), have very sharp claws, stronger bite force and thicker skin.

It'd be a dangerous fight for both and the winner would very likely die to its wounds, too.

I was in downtown milwaukee and I saw some bear getting beaten up by this 50 year old cougar. Needless to say the bear put up little fight, not wanting to hit a woman and all

Bite force of cougar 350 psi

Bite force of black bear 975 psi

Ill take the meaty paws of the black bear over a cougar.  my prediction is the cougar would stand down when the 2 would come face to face if we are talking average size adult black bear vs average size adult cougar.

If the cougar was named Chuck Norris he would win....

One dies leaving the other severely injured and a coyote and a couple of ravens will take that down and clean up the mess.

That's a whole different cougar Wicasa , the most dangerous kind I think.

What if the bear was a certain bear that goes by the name Ditka? Back in ‘85 not even the lions had a chance.

Cougars have a top speed of 40-50mph.  Not sure where you found your info.  I think a fight between the two would be close, but I think I'd side with a cougar more often than not.  175lb Cougar vs 300lb bear and I'd take the Cougar easily, but 175lb Cougar vs 600lb bear and I'd take the bear.

Yes but when you factor in the turtle vs. hare effect, the bear doesn't have quite the advantage as it does on paper.

There's a saying Don't poke the Bear , there is no saying don't poke the cougar.
