My friend's dad wants to take me fishing where we stand in the boat and jig this big plastic or rubber bait with hooks in it. I want to get him a fishing rod as a gift but don't know how long or anything else about the rod. Thank you so much for your help.

The shorter the rod, the more you will like it. Jigging and 8.5 footer will wear on you much faster than a 7.5 or 8.0 footer. Hooksets are better with shorter rods, too. 7.5 is probably ideal. Heavy action to "feel" the bait fall.

One of my friends builds his own blade baits and uses salt water jigging rods with them. I think they are 5 footers and they do not fatigue the angler at all. FWIW.

I'd suggest an 8'0" X-Heavy rod. It will handle both the smaller and larger Bondy's. It a vertical presentation so I don't think longer than 8' is really needed.
