Looking at buying a Shimano Tranx 300 or 400 series reel for the upcoming musky season. Anyone use one last season?

Caught a 38 incher on the Shimano this afternoon.....I like this reel. The musky hit about 5 yards from the boat, and the drag worked flawlessly.....good start to the season.

I went with a 400 "regular speed" Tranx with a power handle and it dominates 10's. The only issue I've encountered with the reel is that after time the drag loosens up so you have to re-tighten it every trip. With that said, it doesn't engage mid-cast like the revos which is a far greater issue. I still like my high-speed Lexa for rubber and jerk baits though.

I just got a Tranx 300 HG. Used it last weekend and I love it. Super smooth, holds more line than I'll need.

Tight Lines!

I purchased the 400 Tranx last season it is a very smooth well built reel.  It can pull in double 10’s but it’s more of an all purpose work horse reel.  Like stated below put a power handle on it if you plan to use it for 10’s.  On a side note with it being a low profile reel if you grip in front of the reel the line tends to hit your hand while reeling.  Once this reel was purchased my Calcutta 400D played second  fiddle

Wife got a 400.  I got the 500 PG.  Her reel is better.  Get a power handle on it and it cranks in 10's just fine.  Although...it really isn't a double 10 reel.  Perfect for most everything else, though.

I bought a 300 last year. I've only used it for northern and bass and am happy with it for that and maybe light musky fishing(will try it this season). If I were to buy one strictly for musky I'd go with a 400 and even then wouldn't expect it to be the workhorse the 500 is. First thing I noticed with the 300 was made in Malaysia stamped on it. I was expecting Japanese made like the 500. Not sure how much that matters though.
