It should work in a pinch for small stuff, but getting a good hook set might prove to be frustrating. Since you have it give it a shot. Once you get a little more experienced definitely look into the proper gear. Just understand it can become addicting and expensive. But the memories are priceless.
Jmp, I wouldn't recommend it, it's just my favorite. It goes against everything the Muskie nuts would tell you. I just tried it cause I got it for free from my buddie, and decided it's my big lure pole. I like it, but doubt anyone else would.
Don't worry about over thinking though. Sometimes it's a good thing. In my opinion, a little experience and practice will help you make a better decision when over-thinking. I think over-thinking is just trying to plan something out more than others would do. You may end up liking the Rod you already got! But after hearing everyone on this thread, which has some real good advice, you can make the decision that suits you. Good luck, and let everyone know how your pursuit turns out.
