I have a question on a rod I have. I got the st.croix triumph casting rod and was wondering if it would work for some muskie. The model is TRC70MHF, the length is 7', the action is medium heavy, its fast action, the line weight is 10-20lb, lure weight is 3/8 - 1oz, and the handle size is 2. Would help alot if anyone could tell me if this would work out.

I've used a similar rod like that and it will work fine for fish in the 30" to 40" range using the 20# test.

It should work in a pinch for small stuff, but getting a good hook set might prove to be frustrating. Since you have it give it a shot. Once you get a little more experienced definitely look into the proper gear. Just understand it can become addicting and expensive. But the memories are priceless.

Jmp, I wouldn't recommend it, it's just my favorite. It goes against everything the Muskie nuts would tell you. I just tried it cause I got it for free from my buddie, and decided it's my big lure pole. I like it, but doubt anyone else would.

Hey 37, My favorite Muskie pole is a monster Coho pole(Southbend), with a big ole Open Face on it. Sometimes with a heavy lure, it seems like your gettin 40 yards on a cast. They fly, but ur pole has to be able to handle it.

Don't worry about over thinking though. Sometimes it's a good thing. In my opinion, a little experience and practice will help you make a better decision when over-thinking. I think over-thinking is just trying to plan something out more than others would do. You may end up liking the Rod you already got! But after hearing everyone on this thread, which has some real good advice, you can make the decision that suits you. Good luck, and let everyone know how your pursuit turns out. Other people can learn from your experience.

Why won't it work? Put some good line on that pappy and go for it! It sounds like you're not experienced enough to over analyze this anyways. Go for it. If you don't like it, get another pole.
