Looking at upgrading a very basic setup I have for Musky fishing. I'm looking at a solid reel to use for bucktails (nothing larger than an 8 blade) and topwater lures. I've landed on the Diawa Lexa 400 and 400HD. Does anyone have any advice as to which model is better and which gear ratio is also better? I've read the reviews on various websites but looking for a little more information. Thanks

I would not buy the Abu Garcia Beast....save your money and just get a C3 if you go that route.  If you are talking Toro Beast, I would just get a regular Toro instead and save money again.  I have three Abu Garcia Toro's with one a winch and none of them have given me any problems or reason to want more.

the low profile high capacity reels are really nice upgrade for musky fishing.  I think all are good at casting, retreiving...I would look at drag ratings to make final decision.    You really dont want something limited to 10lb max drag.

Lexa is at 22-25 which is same as my revo's and would be good choice

Been using some Lexa 300's for the last couple seasons. The 7 to 1 model has taken a lot of abuse from clients but did pretty well. Put about $8 worth of parts in one of them this winter and feels good as new. I picked up a 400 myself but not real sure if I like the big reel as much as the 300 series. Used it a month or 2 last fall. Can definitely feel the extra weight in those big reels as the hours pass by.

I still love my round Abu reels. I have a bunch and they all got bearing. pawl, and drag upgrades. All now have 6 - 7 bearings instead of the 0 - 3 depending on models. Smooth as silk and a piece of cake to maintain or repair.

C3 is a good trolling and sucker reel. I wont cast with them anymore.

Just ordered the 300 on Amazon for 144.00. Was going to get a Ambasador C3 but seen this thread and started looking.

The lexa 300 is 5 oz lighter has 22lb of drag brake and holds plenty of line the 400 is very big and bulky check them out before you buy one . i have the 5.1 and really works great with everything its a great real nice comfortable size to toss 8s all day just my two cents good luck to a great 2016 musky season!!

Get the regular 400. It is a better all around reel. If you want to burn bucktails back to the boat and that is about it, then the High Speed model would be best.

For me, that 5.0 to 5.4 gear ratio is tough to beat...with that sole exception of burning blades.

Since you are "upgrading", have you looked at the Revo Torro models? I'm pretty happy with mine.
