The SE is the newer of the 2 models.

It is said to have brighter colors, and "better interference rejection."

I had the SLT for MANY years, and it worked fine, even fishing right next to other flasher units. I never once thought "I wish the colors were brighter."

Either model will be adequate, but I did upgrade to an FL-12 because of the flat screen and to get a dual angle transducer.

If you are out fishing in snow the dial will fill up on the FL-8 and FL-18 models.

I would consider the FL12 too it has a flat screen which is way easier on the eyes and doesnt freeze up with ice. Also if you go on a trip where the water is deep the FL12 reaches 200 feet. Just something to consider.
