In clear lakes smaller trebles and fluoro leaders do make a difference. Dirty or stained water I wouldn't expect to see a difference. I make my own muskie leaders with fluoro also with just a short strand of wire connected to the hooks. This is based off a very successful guide's idea in Northern Wisconsin, Rob Manthei.

I have been tying my own using 7 strand wire in 20- 30 pounds for many years. Haven't switched to floro or anything else because I haven't seen the need. No bite offs for sure and doesn't seem to bother the fish at all.

There is a big difference between Mono, Flouro and braid.

Would never recommend mono for pike. I would change to flouro or steel. You will lose fish on mono, and usually you'll lose the biggest.

20 lb floro with size 8 hooks. No bigger. Corner of the mouth almost every time.

20# is fine...just need to let a bigger fish run and be careful right at the hole.

I had been using 80lb PowerPro but moved away from it after a couple of bite offs. Went back to using either flourocarbon or making my own out of the same stuff I use as a leader on my 10w flyrod I use for muskies.

I use 50 pound PowerPro braid and haven't had issues with break offs. I use this line on the majority of my open water baitcaster set ups, so I always have ample supply of partial spools that work great for leader material.

I have been using the same no name brand 15 Lb Mono line for the last 5 years. I got a big spool of it a while back for 5 bucks. I fish a lake known for small snakes and it works great for numbers. I have yet to lose one and pulled in a 32in fat fish last year. I also put new leaders on my tip ups every year right before the season starts, mostly cause I'm getting restless and just want to go ice fishing.
