Do you buy guns on need, want, or both?

My father and I have very different buying philosophies when it comes to purchasing guns. He only buys what he needs for hunting/shooting. It has to have a purpose for him to spend the money on it. I think he owns 4-5 firearms and tries to use them for dual purposes. For example, he has a Browning Citori over/under in camo that he uses for turkey, dove, waterfowl, and pheasants. He doesn't need a 20 gauge if he has a 12. Even though our deer land turned into a rifle zone last year, his slug gun is good enough. You get the point. I on the other hand purchase more on want than need. Sure I buy for the game I hunt, but I have a handful of this and thats in multiple calibers, different barrel lengths, etc. How do you folks purchase? Just curious.

I'm past 'need' too. I even try to resist the 'want'. I got a Model 70 in 308 when I turned 14 back in MI. It would still be more than enough for any deer or bear hunts today. I'm more likely to buy a handgun today than any rifle.

I was smitten by a Walther PPS recently, bought one in 9mm. I just tried it out the other week, shot just fine.

I would say Dittos post nailed it for me. Its 100% WANT for me, especially since I don't hunt anything anymore. I tend to buy a lot more handguns these days as I enjoy shooting handguns more than anything. I also agree though that I like to buy off the wall stuff every now and then. Its funny as my wife kind of knows my tendencies of what kind of guns I like to buy and shoot and its great when I buy something and even she says "why the hell did you buy THAT?!?" LOL! Big Smile

I buy guns because I want them, then I find a need for them. I have various calibers of rifles and different shotguns not because I need them, but I want to own them.

I have .17 HMR, .22 short, .22 LR, .223, .25-06, .300 Win Mag, .45/70, .50 cal and .54 cal muzzleloaders, various shotguns, three or four 9mm handguns, a couple .22 handguns. .40 S&W, .44 mag. In the past I've also owned .243, .30-06, 6.5x55mm, .264 Win Mag, and .270...

Did I NEED any of these guns, probably not. But I want them, and if I can afford it, I will own them. The guns I don't see much of a use for after a while, I then sell to get other guns.

Some guys don't have budgets that allow all the wants so they get as much dual purpose use as possible I guess. Boring as it may be, some don't have a choice.

As far as the "I don't need a gun" pic, looks like gov't paranoia to me.

Ditto Ditto again. M700, 10-22, 870, got those. Now I buy things that make others go WTH. Like a cap n ball Ruger Old Army in Stainless or a LeFever SxS made in 1920.

If you only purchased guns on need you would have a 12ga, a 30/06 and a 22 rimfire. This would cover you for everything in North America. But it sure would be boring! I had everything I needed by the time I was 12 but that hasn't kept me from buying a lot of things I wanted!
