I also believe that each warden has a laundry list of people that they are actively monitoring and are just waiting for them to do something stupid. Either known/habitual offenders or tips from other hunters etc. Random stops and checks I'm sure make up a good number of violations but wardens are pretty sharp. They weed out the scum eventually.

If it isn't the tag number, then maybe it's in the barcode, it's certainly attached to your user information. However it is, I was left with the impression that the DNR would be able to know. Regardless, as mentioned before personal integrity comes into play. What was to stop somebody from doing the same thing with the old system? What was to stop somebody from using multiple old tags? Or somebody else's tag? Or placing a tag on an animal and removing it to place on another without registering? Short of having a warden escort every single hunter, 90% of our game laws involve some form of personal integrity.

How many times has a warden stopped you to check your deer to make sure it was tagged properly?

I think it's going to make it extremely convenient and that is very unfortunate for wildlife and fellow hunters. If everything is going to the honor system then why have field wardens, they should just trust us right? There are too many people that have little disregard for the laws already, just read the cuffs and collar report in the Wis Outdoor News, and that is only a tiny fraction of the reports statewide. I'm all for convenience, but this should be concerning.

Except I could print off my paper tag, take it to kinkos and make 10 copies. And as long as I don't register a deer on any of those tags I could shoot and "legally tag " 9 deer and still appear to have a valid kill tag if stopped while hunting again. It all boils down to the honor system of registering a deer...just like always. Does this make it simpler to skirt the laws? In a way yes. But poachers get caught because they can't keep their mouth shut...the tag/registering process is just a paper trail to prove guilt.

Not from my experience. I have multiple copies printed not to violate but just to have them in case of loss or damage. I printed 3 on regular paper and one hard copy on photo paper they retained the same tag #. We could always violate if this pushes you over the hump I hope you get caught. We always need to police ourselves no matter what we are doing in life.

Each tag has a Tag #. This number is unique, and assigned to the hunter and that specific carcass tag. When a new/duplicate tag is printed, it gets a new number and the other is invalid. Unlike a license, which can be reprinted and past copies still would be valid. Once registered, it doesnt matter. The electronic system updates in seconds. You can no longer print new tags, and the prior tags you printed to plan to violate with, are still invalid, and a warden will know this when they run your information. At least, thats how I understood it when a warden explained it to me.

yeah, I don't understand what's going to stop someone from printing off a handful of turkey tags or deer tags beforehand so they always have a fresh tag in their pocket. Or even allowing the use of pencil sounds absurd, I can see guys writing down the kill information on their tag, taking their deer home and then erasing the penciled in tag information and go back out hunting. Thought I read somewhere that once an animal is called in and registered that no more duplicate tags could be printed, but by that time, it's gonna be way too late. Maybe I'm missing something as I'm learning this new system, but to me it seems like a poachers dream.

Got my tags this week.Maybe I'm missing something here but, what is going to stop some people from making copies of these tags for dubious reasons.
