Last weeks news but, same issues as before only you don't have to carry a pen, a huge improvement would be to eliminate the ability to print multiple tags, I know a poacher will poach but this is one thing that law enforcement wants. Or even better issue an actual tag, i get it that the vendor that supplied the old tag strips no longer carries it, Wyoming issues a tag on a material that is darn near indestructable. Validate the tag by cutting the appropriate notch.

Looks like this is getting an update after spring Turkey season since the regs are already printed.  If I read correctly, now you will just have to rip off a section of your tag to validate it.  No pen/pencil anymore.  Nothing to fill out on the tag.

It doesn't fix any of the potential issues with people abusing the system but makes the current system easier to validate the tag.

Ok, lets say you shot your deer. Filled out the tag and called in to register it at point of kill. Your brother said he is heading home so he takes your deer with him. Do you still need it tagged with it being registered?

If you are with the deer (dragging, driving, butchering, etc) the tag needs to be with you and not necessarily on the deer. If you leave the deer (go tithe tavern, back hunting, etc) the tag then needs to affixed to the deer. It still needs to be validated at the point of kill however.

I was told yesterday, in person at the Deer and Turkey Expo, by the DNR warden at the desk,

that you are not required to TAG your deer any longer, just to call in, get, and write the numbers on your "tag" and have it available for review.

There was an exception stated... if you , say drag your deer to your truck (or anywhere that you are not), leave it there and go get stuff or go back to hunting or whatever, then you need to tag it there so a tag is available for review.

My take on this:

Registration is a mute point because poachers were not registering them before. If they did they already got a tag from someone else at that point. I've never heard of anyone who had a warden check their deer as they dragged it out of the woods, especially in the dark. Every deer I shot my entire life could have been untagged because I was never checked. In fact the only time I ever heard of someone complaining is on Lake-Link when they take a picture of a buck without the tag on it. Big Smile

Now I would never poach a deer but it doesn't exactly take rocket science to figure it out, even the old license ways. Think about it. If you poached a deer, once its in your truck you got away with it unless you talk about it. Assume you drag it out in the dark and then factor in how many people you know that have gotten checked in the dark dragging a deer (probably none). Talking is how guys get caught. A warden is not going to show up at your house to see if you have a tag with a registration number on it unless someone talks and you are suspected of something. Its like the possession limit of fish, they don't check unless they hear something.

You could even take it a step further and call in a car hit deer. No tag, no sheriff needed. Then you even have a back story! Okay, now I'm thinking way too much about this. But then again this took a minute....think about a real poacher with all year to plan it out.

I think we'll be okay, aside from punching pens through the paper tags.... Dull

As for registering your deer the old way when registered your deer they cut your tag in half.I just see bigger problems in the future upon harvesting your Deer you have enuff time to pick witch of the 4 buck to actually register.I remember when I was younger and never understood what camp meat ment as the old guys use to talk about it a lot when we would go to the tavern with my family for dinner.but I sure those days will be making a strong come back once again their should be some big bucks registers I'm not worried as I hunt private an we practice let go an grow but as the panic sets in I'm sure the quality deer management guys are going to see less an less mature deer as result. if they tag it drive it home leave the tag on pull out the copy an back to the woods for big an better chance should it arise.I already know that people in Waupaca are getting angry my family who own 800 total acres possibly more won't shoot doe if can't choose for themselves won't be hunting an or touch their woods witch will be ruff on the small acre neighbors as they are starting to ask my uncle if anyone got their tags yet he told it depends on the county's result .witch mean ruffle at least 15 families I no Might see one deer if their lucky now do to lack of movement once again. Add this kind of desitions with out big land owner hunting will continue be a lot harder I don't see why last year people who pitched licence didn't get a questionnaire or a vote card at least if the people had the opportunity to vote on major changes they would feel involved an not like the county's in forcing them into poor decisions.after all stuff as such is for the people by the people an should be chosen by the people as it is our God given resources they are ruling on

Short of having a warden escort every single hunter, 90% of our game laws involve some form of personal integrity. [/I>

I'm with ya on that BeerTown, guess it would make it extremely easy as far as having multiple copies, filling them out afield make the trip home, clean your animal throw the tag and grab another...

Not quite so convenient for deer as would be for turkey but legally a signed tag w/conformation kill number from DNR needs to stay with the harvested meat until fully consumed and legally if the animal is mounted needs the proper kill tag as well..

I just like the fact I don't need to drive outa my way to find a registration station open in the evenings and Sundays...
