I rarely look at the classifieds here. I did today because I'm looking for a specific something...then - since I'm deeply involved in a transom repair project and a member of a transom repair group,etc...I looked at a boat for sale. Older boat, same make as mine....for sale for...quite a bit for a boat that age. Roughly the equivalent of a downpayment on a house.
I have come to realize/learn that almost every boat from that manufacturer of that general age needs a transom core replacement, will soon need one,or has already had one...So I zoomed in. The dimpling and bubbling around the bolt heads are clearly visible to anyone looking for it.
The boat looks nice but it will soon be unusable without a very expensive repair. We're talking $4-$8k if done by professionals. I'm going to spend $1k and roughly 50 hours of my time, I've done it once before, and I'm only using sealed marine grade plywood, not coosa board.
Ordinarily I don't care what people buy or sell. But this is a huge deal for someone...When buying a boat take special care to inspect the transom. Puckering around bolts means the core is swelling from water intrusion and decay fungi.. Bubbling means there's corrosion in the aluminum skin itself. Both are obvious once zoomed in.
