My internet provider no longer provides a free modem. I have 5 MBPS service. Rental is $5 per month. Would it be better to buy a modem or if so which one? Lund

yes, my mistake, but looks like something like the first item will work for you, good luck, be sure to secure it as well.

nihsif Yes I have DSL. Looks like the first item you listed would be what I need. Right now I have an Ethernet cable from my modem to my desk top and another cable to my sony tv. We do wireless on a laptop and an Ipad. Is the second item only a router? Lund

do you have DSL or CABLE

my experience is that Linksys ( now part of Cisco ) is a reliable, easy to configure modem, you may consider getting a combo unit that is modem and router with wifi if you don't already have a router

since you have a relatively slow connection, I would guess it is DSL

here's an example, and it would pay for itself in 8 months

has 3 Ethernet ports and wireless, fairly disposable at that price...but there are other choices as well

change search to cable if you have cable, not dsl

my original cable modem was this model, but I recently upgraded to faster to accommodate my faster requirements for wireless and Ethernet

still relatively disposable, and was a solid performer for me
