OK i'm going to purchase a helix 5 for ice fishing. Mainly for the gps capabilities I would like to mount it to my atv or snomachine. anyone know if the helix ice and the helix sonar gps combo are the same unit except for the transducer? should I get the ice machine or get the sonar gps combo and purchase an ice ducer if I want to use the sonar? thoughts?

I wanted the Helix Ice 5, but was hesitant as to the size of the screen. Old Eyes!! But by the same token I wanted to mount on a 4x4 or sled. however this weekend just ordered the Helix 7 DI, and an extra Ice Ducer. Excited to get it delivered and out on the ice if we ever get any!!

Personally I don't care for the flasher mode on the Helix. I much prefer the 2d graph split with the zoom and use the lines like you would see in the boat. Takes a bit of getting used to seeing fish on the bottom but works great.

I used a helix 5 sonar only all last season. No problems with cold I could see. The unit works great i never fished outside of a shack for long in anything below 0 so that would my cutoff for knowledge about screen issues. I think most lcd displays get a little lag in the cold until they run for a minute or so.

I have not had it long enough to answer that question. The times I had it out it was not super cold I would say 10 was about as cold as I have had it in and no issues at all.
