Looking for not only portable but also can mount to a canoe that you don't own and holds battery decent. Weight a factor with portages. Don't need fancy-color, gps, or other. Mainly for deep lakes spotting lake trout and taking depth.
Anyone have a few suggestions that may fit the bill.

I'm thinking maps weigh less than batteries. Sometimes paring down your stuff to the bare minimum is the way to go on a canoe trip. There was always "that guy" with the heaviest personal pack complaining when told to carry some group gear, like; "If I carry the tent, will you take the cook kit?" For bass, fish visible shallow structure. For walleye, fish moving water in low light situations. For pike and lakers drag a larger deep diving plug thru the depths by steep hills or cliffs. Use your two piece "beater" rod ,not your new graphite seven footer. On BWCA the fish have never jumped in the boat for my friends but paddling the area is always a blast. Have fun and remember, when you have to carry all your stuff and a canoe on your shoulders, less stuff is way more fun.
