Memorial Weekend Fishing Report Up at the NW Angle, we have been having exceptionally good weather which has contributed to great fishing. Temperatures in the upper 70's, light wind and no cold fronts coming through. Our first bugs hatched this weekend which also helped play a part. Our water temperature is now about 50 degrees. On the Ontario side, you could pick a point anywhere and catch fish. One group caught and released 77 fish the first day and 78 fish the second day in the SAME spot!. Their largest was a 24" walleye with most in the 18"-20" range. Another group who regularly fish the NW Angle over Memorial Weekend, said this was the best fishing they've seen at this time of the year. Both the east and west side of Falcon Island were just awesome. Crappies still haven't started spawning so were more scattered. 25 feet was the magic number and 1/4 ounce jigs seemed to be the ticket. While the deer are still back in the woods having their fawns, we were fortunate to see a mama bear swimming while carrying her two cubs on her back! Until next week, good fishing! 6.12.21 Sunset Lodge Fishing Report

Walleye fishing has been great!

Large fish have been caught recently in many different depths between 3-35’ with a variety of methods including jig minnow, spinners, crank baits and bobber set ups.

With temperatures above normal, water temperatures have followed into mid to high 60’s.

We just experienced our first May Fly hatch of the season which has not shut down the bite but altered it to a suspended bite. Typically, bottom bouncers and spinners with a crawler is most productive post hatch.

Pike have recently started moving into weedy bays where growth has begun.

The occasional accidental musky has been caught but the season begins NEXT WEEKEND!

2.9.21 Sunset Lodge Fishing & Ice Report!

We are finding quality walleye and sauger in 20-24 ft, with the best method being to acctract them in with a rattle bait such as a rippin rap or buckshot.  Our houses with the best numbers have been ones in 28 ft. or deeper. When no fish are being marked, it is important to aggressively rip baits 3-4 feet, then slow the action as fish appear on screen.

The attitude of a walleye can change from house to house, where one shack has all the action on a deadstick, the next house can get most bites by jigging. Angles who reasses their presentaion daily will put more fish in the pail.

Pike from 22-44 inches are being caught on live or dead sucker minnows. Bring up some suckers and place tip ups on or near rock structure and watch flags fly!

The Ice Road from Warroad is open and in great shape.

Sunset Lodge Fishing & Ice Report - 1.8.21

Walleye fishing is excellent but walleye catching can be challenging with atmospheric pressure rising and falling. Our best houses during unstable times have been away from the break lines in softer bottomed areas. A true deadstick with light tackle will out preform most presentations under these conditions.  Currentley we have stable, high pressure forecasted though the weekend and action is really heating up!

Rappala Rip’n Raps, Flutter spoons and Perch talkers in pink and white, green, chartreause and gold have been providing best results. Houses are currentley being brought back to breaklines anticipating a strong bite this weekend.

Snowmobile trails are in good condition considering we have had little to no snow for weeks. The Ice Road from Warroad will not be completed for weekend travel but we are crossing our finger that it will be ready early in the week.

12.16.20 Sunset Lodge Fishing & Ice Report!

The Walleye bite has been incredible during early morning and late afternoon in 15-19 feet of water. We have had multiple groups limit out by 8:30am.

Mid-Morning we slide out to 22-26 feet for a better chance at sauger, jumbo perch and some giant northern pike.

When the Walleye have the feed bag on, any bait offered will be taken. Times of less action require a slower, more subtle presentation.

We are still using lighter vehicles to transport guests to fish houses which are currently sitting on 12- 15 inches but expect to have the bombers fired up this weekend.

As of Tuesday afternoon, there was still open water in areas from Buffalo Bay to the South side of Garden island.

We hope to see a snowmobile trail from the south end staked by next week but still do not advise travel across the main lake at this time.

For now, we are taking reservations for guests arriving by plane!

12.8.20 Sunset Lodge Fishing & Ice Update - Northwest Angle of Lake of the Woods

Hello from Sunset Lodge on Oak Island!

We got ice!

Lower than normal current levels have led to better than average, more consistent early ice conditions in the Northwest Angle. Wind and warm temps have kept the main lake south of Garden Island open until just recently.

As usual, ice conditions are always changing and there remain many areas that are still unsafe for travel. With the cold weather and little snow in the forecast we are likely to see improved and more stable ice thickness across the lake.

Our fish houses are resting on 8-11 inches of ice and are within a 10 minute ride of the resort.

Fishing pressure is low and catching is excellent! We have a very strong morning and evening bite with good action in between. Active fish are smashing rattle baits and most fish will accept a jig and a minnow.

Traffic is low and conditions are ideal for an early ice getaway, we are accepting fly-in reservations starting Monday the 14th! Our runway is marked and is currently sitting on 11 inches of ice. If you don’t have your own plane, we are partnered with Lake Country Air, they are currently flying to us from multiple Northern Minnesota locations

7.6.20 Sunset Lodge Fishing Report

Minnesota Lake of the Woods Walleye action continues in less than 10’ casting Rapala’s, floating leeches or pulling crawlers in rocks and sand bays. Walleye are also showing back up on classic structure including points and main lake reefs. Trolling deep diving Rapala’s has been producing very large pike and slot walleye in 12 to 18 ft. of water.

Lake of the Woods Musky opener was successful in shallow, weeded areas. With one over 50” boated and the rare 49.5” as well as many mid 40” fish.

With water temps increasing into the high 70’s this week, Rock areas are heating up. Smaller bass sized baits and blades have been favored by these toothy critters. Current musky anglers are seeing up to 10 fish a day!

12.23.19 Sunset Lodge Fish & Ice Report

Up in the Northwest Angle we are throwing back the 16s to keep the 18s! We have our houses in 16-24 feet, mostly on the bottom of the break. Twilight bites are fast and furious with some aggressive jigging. The ice road is not quite to us, currently ends on the North end of Flag island where we have a staked snowmobile trail and groomed runway straight to us.

Happy Holidays!!

6.3.19 Sunset Lodge Fishing Report, NW Angle of LOW

Hello from Sunset Lodge!

Water temps in the Northwest Angle are varying between 55 degrees and 59 in shallower areas.

In Minnesota, the bite has been very good. Big fish have been caught trolling crank baits in less than 15 feet of water. Keeper size walleye are being found in 18-22 feet with orange and parakeet jigs and a minnow being the most preferred combo. We saw multiple fish over 28 inches this week!

The fish in Canada have been smacking pink and white, and parakeet jigs tipped with a shiner or minnow in 22-26 feet of water. Aggressiveness has picked up with the rising temperatures. Anglers are reporting a good number of multi specie catches including crappie, perch, walleye, sauger, bass and pike.

Open water season is just getting started and will only improve!

?We hope to see you soon!

Up here in the Northwest Angle lines are tight and fish are biting! Water temps are warmer in the shallows at 50-52 degrees to upper 40’s in the main lake.

Recent weather was not great but the fishing was. Some of the best action has been within a few miles of the lodge. Walleyes have been found anywhere from 3 to 30ft. 22-30ft with a jig and minnow is best during daylight hours.

Multiple trophy walleye were caught this week including a couple 28’s and one 31 inch. The bite off of the dock late evening is really heating up and will produce limits.

Come up soon to take advantage of great spring fishing!

We're still OPEN & fishing up at the NW Angle!

Fishing on the Minnesota side continues to be best early morning and from sundown to dusk. Work deeper edges of the break line in the morning and afternoon, moving up to the flats and points for an evening flurry. With low pressure coming for the weekend expect fishing to be excellent.

On the Ontario side, Crappie action was really good this past weekend in 30+ feet of water. Lots of fish over 14."

Lake conditions have drastically improved as water making slush has receded below the ice or has frozen over in most areas. Caution should be used in areas of high current or between islands.

Hard water fishing ends April 15th!

Hello from the NW Angle!

Areas of slush on trails in Minnesota are refreezing overnight and are still in good condition if well-traveled. Walleye action is getting better every day, with mornings and late evening being best. Rippin’ raps and buckshots are enticing violent strikes; 18-22 ft of water is key. Big northern pike are hitting jiggin’ spoons and tip ups with large baits.

Anglers venturing into Canada continue to find schooled Crappies and big walleye deeper into 30+ feet. A slow presentation is most effective for catching crappies.

Until next week,

Hello from the NW Angle!

Minnesota snowmobile trail conditions are in good shape. The Baudette trail is great north of Knight Island. Walleye action heats up in periods of stable weather. The best catching is happening in 21-25ft, with the most productive method being a dead-stick beside an actively jigged rattle bait such as a buckshot or rippin’ rap. Glow white/pink is out producing other colors. The late ice bite can be phenomenal on Lake of the Woods, ice permitting we will have houses out through the end of the month!

Canadian fishing is recommended via snowmobile as they are light enough not to drop into the slush as easy as other track vehicles. Crappies are still filling buckets and walleye are actively feeding on reef break lines and points. Walleye season is open through April 14th.

Hello from the NW Angle!

Fishing is really starting to pick up, which usually means Spring is on the way!

Fishing on the Minnesota side has been best at first and last light, which can make for long days on the ice this time of year. The Sauger bite has really picked up with a lot good sized eaters coming out of 21-25 ft. The most effective colors for both Walleye and Sauger have been Chartreuse, White, any Glow/lighted/UV (specifically red) and hammered gold. When fishing at depths less than 20 feet, keep an active presentation. Northerns tend to be most active in the early afternoon which is a good time to take a break from jigging and put out a tip-up.

Fishing on the Canadian side has been good since the last snow storm and continues to produce Crappie and Walleye. A light setup for crappies with plastics or larvae has been productive.

Slush is still frozen in well-traveled areas but it plentiful off trail.

Fishing will continue to improve as the weather does, there is still a lot of time to fit in a last minute ice fishing trip!!

Hello from the NW Angle!

Minnesota Walleye can be found in 19-23ft early and late in the day. Rattle baits will call these actively feeding fish to the hole. Midday action is best adjacent to the break line at 25-29ft. These fish are preferring a more subtle presentation such as a minnow and plain hook or a spoon with a whole minnow on a dead-stick. It remains important to constantly re-charge glow baits to keep them productive in the deeper water.

In Canada, walleye and crappie fishing is good in typical spots. Travel can become difficult in slushy areas, solo travel is not advised. Try to run on previous tracks laid as areas of slush will have frozen over night where machines have packed the trail. We are no longer running day houses on the Canadian side, however now is your chance to bring snowmobiles, hire a local guide and limit out on the hot March bite!

We are still offering 50% off mid-week lodging through March! (Sun-Wed nights)

Until next week,

Hello from the NW Angle!

Walleye and Sauger fishing on the Minnesota side has been a much more active bite than the previous few weeks. We are fishing anywhere from 21 to 28 ft. on Jiggin’ raps, Rippin’ raps and Buckshot with glow green and glow red being the most productive colors. Make sure to have an active presentation to get them off of the bottom. Dead stick method is still producing during mid-day however, it is helpful to have a jigging line in as well to lure them into the immediate vicinity.

Crappie fishing is holding steady east of Oak Island on the Canadian side. Deeper holes (30+ feet) are the target area. Using a small set up with a basic minnow head or plastic will bring them in. The bite is incredibly light so some patience and trial and error is key.

We are beginning to see a large amount of slush in our area, keep to staked trails and travel in groups. After the recent snow storm we are getting snow moved and trails back into favorable condition. Join us Saturday March 2nd for the 18th annual Edge Riders Snow Rally. Support the snowmobile club that keeps our trails in amazing condition and enter to win a brand new Polaris Titan. 11am-4pm at Sunset Lodge!

Until next week,
