I want to start storing my boat outside in my backyard during the winter months. I just need something to keep it out of the sun and keep the snow and garbage from the trees off of it.

The canopys I have been looking at seem like they could do the job, but I am not sure how they would hold up in high winds or heavy snow fall.

Anyone have any experience with them?

I also have a carport from Menards. It's about 24' x 20', enclosed on three sides. I don't even cover the boat anymore. The biggest problem I have is the boat gets a bit dusty. The frame comes with holes you drop supplied rebar anchors thru into a hole filled with concrete. Once the concrete sets the canopy will "sway" but not go anywhere in heavy winds. Greatest investment to protect your boat. Also, the 24" of snow we had last winter had no effect on it. I didn't let it sit there forever, I raked it off but it held for 24 hours or so until I could remove it.

Have used then aluminum carport from menards for 10 years for the triton. It is enclosed to the ground on three sides leaving east open. Keep cover and travel cover on boat. Withstood big winds last year that took down trees. Has held up well to weather. Hope that helps.

I bought a tarp style building from Menards this fall to put my boat in. It is a round style not a canopy kind. It is made of heavy duty piping and anchored to the ground on the four corners by auger type anchors. It has both ends closed and the one end has 3 zippers to open up. The tarp is heavy duty and should last for about 10 years I have been told. The size is 10 ft high, 13ft wide and 24 ft long. Plenty of room for the boat, a small trailer and my brush mower. Cost about $500 and put up in an afternoon. Thought about a storage unit but in about two years the building will be paid for and now the boat is in my yard and now I can keep it out of the sun in the summer too. I would like to build a pole shed but don't have the $$$ at this time. I have thought about one of the coverall buildings that you see on alot of farms. Can make them huge and the price per square foot to build is the cheapest of anything you could possibly build.

All great ideas. I find is extremely frustrating that all these houses I'm looking at are built by city guys who must not have lives. You can get a car or two and maybe a lawn mower in these garages. So sad.

Unfortunately I can't possibly see leaving a $40k+ boat outside under a tarp structure. To many dollars in electronics and fishing gear sitting there.

I've used a steel frame/ tarp one for my boat for the past 3 years. I might get one more year out of it. A lot of the seams are starting to tear at stress points from age and the wind. Make sure you anchor it down well if you go with one of these...I used a bunch of rebar and sunk it into the ground. I suppose 4 years for $200 isn't too bad.

My Father had a homemade one last for 8 years. 2 A-frames made of 2x4's with a steel pipe spanning 18'. Covered the whole thing with a cheap Poly tarp. It lasted a long time and never failed from a snow load. We just recently built a wood structure with a metal roof, because his NEW neighbors complained that the tarp looked tacky.

LOL, I had one of those aluminum pole and plastic tarp models.

The first one collapsed under a single night snow load.

The second one (replaced by the first under warranty) collapsed as well.

So I simply got my money back and bought a steel "boat port". My son and I built it in a day.

The next winter, a large cedar tree broke in half and fell on the boat port. It bent ONE panel and I had to chainsaw the tree off the structure.

Don't waste your time and money with one of those cheap aluminum and plastic shelters, unless of course you really don't mind pi$$ing your money away....
