I bought a boat last year with a stainless prop that was painted black. my question is, is there any reason to paint a stainless prop?

The Johnson/Evinrude/OMC(now BRP) SST series of props have had a black teflon coating over stainless since the mid-1970s. By the way, SST meant "Stainless Steel Teflon".

Some of the older Evinrudes came with a black painted stainless prop. It was a cost saving measure to not have to polish it. My 88 Stratos came with one.

I would agree with Wade! lol. Either that or the owner painted it along with the lower unit so the motor looked more attractive to the buyer.

I think I saw somewhere that some props are teflon coated, probably to decrease the friction of the water or something like that.
