2000 mercury 125 hp starting troubles

Went to go take the boat for its maiden fishing voyage. Took about 4-5 trys the dock before it finally stayed running, worked fine all the way out on lake michigan. We trolled for about 3 hrs with the kicker, went to go start the big engine and it would turn over, but not start..tried numerous times with nothing. Decided to limp in with the kicker. Tried a few more times and it finally started, but it sounded rough. Took a quick spin on the lake and headed it.

Changed the spark plugs when I got home and tried to start it again, it would start but not idle more than 30seconds to a minute before dying out...any suggestions...thinking a good tune up would help.

Maybe the idle screw adjustment or some other adjustment???

What series of controls you have TT ? Push the round button IN on the throttle ,,,,,, then advance as if putting into fwd gear . (Series 3000)

All controls have a fast idle warm option,......2000 Mercury does for sure.Worked on them Merc's and omc's along time. Crying

Thanks guys for the replies, I have off tomorrow and going to try out the suggestions. I did just put premium gas in the big tank, should try a little tank of premium.

Mr.pike, your throttle controls are different than mine to be able to fast idle in nuetral. My throttle controls don't have the ability to do that.

I have the same outboard . Not sure why you would be having any troubles unless the gas is old/ethanol garbage. I assume you know to push in the key to prime the thing and then maybe warm it up a couple mins at a fast idle in neutral ???? Of course I am only assuming ? Otherwise if it ran OK otherwise ,,,,,, I'd hit it hard with seafoam and re evaluate after the treatment.

Maiden voyage? First thing I'd do is run the motor with fresh gas. I have a 3 gal remote tank and hose. This would at least eliminate the gas, tank, primer bulb and hose as a problem. Tinkering with the 4 carbs should be left up to the pros. Did you try Seafoam yet?

First thing I would do would be to burn off all of the old gas, assuming it was from last year. Fresh gas can do wonders if you're not already gummed up.
