Just bought a 617 ranger and was looking for advice as to where to mount some downriggers on it. I know not to mount them to the rail system, but could a traxx system be put on the gunnel behind the rails and then the riggers put on that way. I thought about mounting them on the carpet in the back, but on the left and right side there are hatches, so I didnt know if a rigger mounted on a hatch cover would be a good idea.

I don't have any pics right now as I am picking the boat up this weekend, so I will post some ASAP. Thanks for any help or advice.

Brian

Here's the progress report. Ended up going to a ranger dealer and they suggested putting in a track system. So they took off the rails and put a 48" track in on both sides. Along with 2 triple rod trees and some more single rod holders, its all set and ready for the riggers. Will post pics when I get it home.

I would be hesistant to mount riggers to the rails, as they are only tapped and screwed, not through-bolted. Only a matter of time intil they give.

Here's how we have ours. The blue boat is the old 690, the white one is the new 620, just for some ideas.

I mounted the base plates to the grab handle on each side of the boat. I have been using them now for two years and it works great. The riggers then bolt to the mounting base using the four nuts provided. so the little 4" base stays ont he grab handle and the riggers remove with just four of the thumb screw type nuts.

Thanks Tinyfisher, going to a ranger dealer this week to see what they recommend. I'm hoping I can mount them somewhere, hate to not be able to have my downriggers for salmon fishing.

Not sure exactly what your layout is like, but we used to have a 690 and now have a 620. On the 690, rear corners was the best spot. On the 620, we have them right in the step-down at the transom. Basically somewhere that you have access underneath to be able to through-bolt, preferable with a backer plate. Make sure to slightly counter-sink the holes so you don't spiderweb the glass.

I would not mount to a hatch.
