That really different sound that rough to me.Out of the water especially however I don't have a trained ear. I would always run Mercury quick clean in my fuel mixture.If your tank is low double up on the mixture and take it out and run the piss out of it. My boat mechanic said they are built to run two ways wide open and almost wide open. Idling a big Mercury is slow death. JMO

First thing I'd try is a "decarb".
Best if you can do it in the water. I did it in the driveway. Well, kind of. I couldn't let myself run the motor wide open for 10 min on muffs, never even hear an alarm. First method not so well. Tried second method, started it and ran it and there was so much smoke it was unreal. I mean, l could have had covert ops on the whole block.
Took it to the lake, ran WOT for awhile and it's like brand new. Seriously. Always would stutter when first putting it in gear, doesn't do that anymore, wasn't getting the speed out of it, now it's right back to where it was.
Cheap and worth a shot, IMO. Take it for what it's worth.
