Just a heads-up, I believe if you put any motor on a boat/canoe/raft, you have to register the item. Big Mac

I have a 2.5 hp Nissan 2 stroke that is about as light as motors get, and I've been canoeing for over 30 years and owned many canoes.

Personally I think the side mount setups look awkward at best.

If I wanted to use a canoe like a boat, this is what I'd do:

Probably get a small jon boat much cheaper though.

Ya you do need to register if you add a motor. I have a square stern Grumman. Rated for a 4hp I only have a 6hp.Great combo. Used to use it a lot. You will need a side mount to add a motor. Go small with a side mount. A little 2 HP will work great. Watch on Craig's list, they do pop up once in a while. That and a gallon of gas will take you a long way. Electric works too but a battery will be about 50#.
