I have a 17 ft smoker craft. presently have a 2stroke 8hp mariner for a kicker, I want to go to a 4 stroke, I am wondering if a 5hp mercury would be sufficient, I see most people using 9.9 but I really don't want to add any more weight to the back of the boat then necessary looking for opinions thnkx

I was looking at options. I went with 9.9 because it had a larger block and smoother run. The single cylinder kickers ran rough in my opinion. I have a 17 foot Lund.

Get a two cylinder kicker if you want a smooth trolling motor. If your main consideration is price, you can get a low price on a lightly used 1 cylinder - the owner is dumping it.
