Like others have said, I would look at the deals on new that are around right now.

I am sure you can pick up a good unit used but that is not for me. For some reason every time I buy something used it has something expensive wrong with it. I think I just have bad luck. I have been burned enough times that I try my hardest go new for the warranty.

As Big Shane said, there are lots of deals on new stuff going on right now. Figure out how much you want to spend and go from there. Keep in mind that used electronics are not worth near what their retail new value is.

Big Shane has it right, you can get deals now on new products as the retailers make room for the 2016 models....

this thread has some opinions and links to some items on sale

if you find one you think would serve your needs, maybe ask about that model or mfg...

only reason I would buy used would be if I wanted to take a chance on a high end model for a entry level price...

here's a link to that other thread

Cabelas has some great deals on new electronics right now. I would go that route before buying used.

Bought two used. One from Craiglist. That was a 2 year old $500 unit I got for $10. No joke, worked great.

Other unit bought from a friend. Again no issues.

I just bought a new humminbird. $300 will get you a sonar/GPS combo in color. For that price can't go wrong.

I'd possibly look at eBay if buying used, but I wouldn't personally consider anything over 5 years old.

I would never buy a used unit unless it was dirt cheap from someone I knew. I have one on the front of my boat which is over 25 years old, just replaced one on the back which is 14, may swap it out with one on front. Take care of them they last a long time, mostly they become obsolete.

I agree its not wise to buy a used one from a stranger, but I have bought 2 units on eBay with no problems. They were older B/W models. I don't think I paid more than $50 for each one.

I've sold a few on eBay also. I always describe them accurately. So were the ones I purchased.

..Gotta keep that feedback score at 100%.

If you go that route. Make sure the person has a lot of transactions as a seller and a high feedback score.

The only time I would is if it was from someone I knew or it was going to be a secondary unit. There are good deals on new units out there id be cautious buying used.
