I'm looking at upgrading from my 14 foot Sea Nymph with a 25HP Evinrude to a 16 foot Alumacraft with a 75 HP Mariner. I've always had an Evinrude or Johnson on my boat. So I'm just concerned I may not like it or have issues. Plus my local mechanic won't work on it if there are issues. I'd have to drive another 15 miles to the closest Mercury mechanic. I don't want a big debate over who's best, but just what to expect with a different brand of motor. Other option would be to buy the boat and change motors. But that might cost too much to do. Thanks guys.

I sold Mariner for years and the 75 was a very reliable engine. Same block as the 90 and similar torque. We rarely saw one for repairs.

StakeSter,

That looks just like the one on the boat I am looking at. Going to look at it tomorrow.

Nothing wrong with a Mariner... I have a 15 hp from the 80's, and it still runs great.

I have a MonArk Pro 1650, with a 75 Mariner. It's been the best engine I've ever had. It's a 1996. Oil injected. Never had a problem with her in 4 yrs. I've also got an Evinrude 15hp, and just recently a Force 75hp. I haven't had any problems with the other motors either, but can tell you the 75 Mariner has good power. I just can't make myself buy a new motor when the one I have is working as designed.

I have an early 90's 75 Mariner on a 17' smoker craft for the last 5 years and it has been as close to flawless as I could've asked for. Had to take it in once for an oil alarm sensor but that was it. Starts and runs great. I know not all other Mariner owners have had the luck I have but it's a great motor to me.
