This is a new boat to me since last year and am concerned or curious to see how fast the boat should run with just me in it. I believe there is something wrong with the motor since it is only running at 3500 rpm wide open. (could be my tach) However the max speed I am seeing with this boat is 23-24 mph with minimal gear in it. I am going to take it in for tune up and make sure everything is good. What are your guys thoughts on the speed I am getting? Stainless steel prop, not sure of the pitch since I am not home. Thanks

yOUR Tach may be not hooked up correctly,,or you need a different tach,,,Check out Kendor Marine for a tach,, I doubt it's your prop

There is a guy named Charlie in New London that is an Evinrude only repair center,,,he know's his stuff,,,look up his number and give him a call

I HAD SAME PROBLEM..switched out the tach,,,fixed my concern about LOW RPMS,,you have to make sure you connect to the correct pole

You also may want to consider getting your prop cupped and ventilated,,,John Janake in Burlington is the man for that,,PRO_PELLERS is the company name

AyeFeesh is correct. The numbers just don't jive. The Etec was not introduced until '03 so maybe the boat was re-powered and the pole setting on the back of the tach was not properly reset. If the hull is a 1700 it should 31-34mph.If it's a 1760 don't expect more as you're severely under-powered.

Just saw your speed is from GPS which leads us back to the Tach. If your taking the boat in for service I'd have them check that.

These numbers would all make more sense if your RPM was actually more like 5200rpm.

Something doesn't seem right.

24mph for 60hp tiller @ 3500rpm with 13 pitch prop (assuming 2.67 gear ratio) would be INCREDIBLE by my calculations. More like impossible.

Even if it was an 18 pitch prop that still wouldn't account for that.

I think either your tachometer is off or your speed is off. How are you measuring both of those variables?

Is your Osprey a 1700 or a 1760? Are you sure your prop is a 13" not an 18"?

3500 RPM is too low... That is the first thing to get to the bottom of to help figure out what is going on.

K.P, I do have electric trim on the motor and know how to use this. My boat is completely planed out when I take the reading from my gps. It could be the prop, I am currently out of town so I dont have my prop pitch. Unless my tach is way off im not sure whats going on. Like i said it runs great, just not getting the speed i want. Just was curious if anyone run into this before. Maybe a injector or something like that? Anyhow I appreciate all the responses!

Thanks, Mike

You should be able to go faster than that. My buddy has an early 1980's 60hp evinrude 2 stroke on a same year 18ft smokercraft and he was doing low 30's with the boat empty. Speed was measured by him racing me in my old boat.
