Trail Camera Pictures
Thanks guys, I've really been trying to learn as much as possible about mature buck behavior and habits. Killing these old public land bucks in the bigwoods is one tough puzzle to crack so I've had to try adjusting my strategies. If you haven't been on the HuntingBeast forums you really need to give them a read. By far the best forum I have ever seen. Guys are readily willing to share as much info and help each other out. It is a bed hunting style in which you scout for buck beds in the off season and prep stand sites to hunt specific bedded bucks during archery. The general idea is that all mature bucks will bed with the wind at their back so that they can smell anything approach from behind while they look downwind, usually at the backtrail.
Scoutking- Thanks for the additional data.. Very interesting info on the bedding patterns being tied to wind direction. I have been hunting deer now for 40+ years and thought I had a pretty good knowledge of this majestic game animal.. Shows how much I can still learn..
If Darin had a "Best -Post" award you would have my vote!!!!
Kona- this bed was used by multiple different deer before Oct 6. On Oct 6 the pictures buck came in with a 2 yr old 8 point and bedded for the day and after that he was the only deer on camera until gun season when I took it down. He bedded in that spot 5 days in October and only a couple in november. I looked up the wind direction and he only used the bed on a strict WSW wind. Goes to show how picky these mature bigwoods bucks are.
