Went out last week on my first coyote hunt with nothing to show for it. Saw alot of sign but nothing ever came in. I was hunting on public land. Was using rabbit in distress call. Anybody got some hints or info for me? Everything i come across on the web or on tv is always about hunting out west in wyoming or nevada. It seems like nobody hunts coyotes in se wisconsin. please tell me i'm not the only one. Doh!

Haven't tried HeviShot yet. I should, I like to test loads.

Thanks for the info, I was planning on patterning with various ammo in the near future.

Have you tied hevi-shot dead coyote loads? I've heard amazing things about em, but they aren't cheap.

@fishingmaster1997 - 00 buck sounds cool, but patterns very erratically in every gun I've run it through.  I won't run it past 25 yards with an open choke.  Don't constrict it, that really sends those big pellets in goofy directions.  I know from personal experience that a clean miss at 42 yards with the dog sitting in the middle of the pattern is a possibility, and more than one pellet strike (this includes non-vital strikes) at 35 yards is unusual.

Now, a 12 ga 3" #4 buck with 41 pellets is one shot lethal out to 45 yards every time (so far!).  Much more uniform patterns and plenty of downrange pellet energy.

I want to try Winchester XR coyote loads just to see how they function.  If they function anything near to their Longbeard XR's, well, I'm gunna shoot out to 70 yards.  But I have to test them on paper first.

Anyone hunt them during the summer? I have yet to shoot a coyote would love to do some hunting this summer.

This may sound gross to you but I wouldn't mind trying coyote meat just to say I have.

I recently picked up a inexpensive electronic call with good reviews and a few 3" 14 pellet 00 buck loads as well as a bunch of slugs and a bunch of 2.75" 9 pellet 00 buck loads.

Any tips?

I used to do a lot of fox and coyote hunting when I was a kid. Used to use a car stereo with loud speaker attached to it and a car battery. lol. Would pull it on a sled and play the rabbit distress call cassette tape. Good times. Now I live in the city and have a 14 year old boy. Would like to get him out and experience fox and coyote. Looking for someone who might want to meet up or has an abundance of land and let us shoot a few. We are ethical and he is Hunter Safety trained. Hope to hear from someone. Seems like the days of letting your neighbor hunt your land are gone.

Anyone know if you can hunt coyotes in Kettle Moraine State Park (north zone). Haven't hunted coyotes before, but thought it would be fun since ice fishing isn't cooperating this year. I have a 5mm Remington, which may be a little light, but have shot ground hogs and fox with it in the past and it seemed to work well. Thanks for any assistance.

your not the only one I haven't been hunting coyote for a long time. the one thing that I have noticed is that wisconsin is much harder because there is not as much open land. I have watched all the hunting tapes out west but they have miles and miles of land. we are not so lucky, try calling softer, the coyotes are much closer than you think. I called the same as the guys out west but when I hunted them for a long time but I noticed that we don't have the hills and the length to call them. Call softer and use your wind and you will do just fine. Just remember that you wount get one every time.

get set up about an hour before light mornings work the best. Open feilds are not a good idea they like to stay in cover so creek lines and wooded areas are your best bet. If you got a female dog in heat bring her out too they will come running in.
