gun kill numbers

I believe the numbers because we have quite a discrepancy in deer numbers between public and private, and north to south. One thing I wish they would do is modify the questions on the registration stub. Asking how many deer I saw the day I shot one and how many hours I hunted that day doesn't paint an accurate picture. I said I saw one deer and hunted one hour which was true for that day. It didn't ask what I saw or hunted prior. If it did I would have said 30 hours and saw 6 deer (two probably repeats so really 4), not nearly as good sounding.
The DNR doesn't publish a kill number based on the number of deer they're told were observed by hunters. As hunters we jumped up and down a number of years ago to have the deer counted on the landscape because we didn't believe the DNR. Then a few years ago we did the same this but this time we demanded a third party do the counting and some still don't believe the numbers. What will make us happy? This is deer hunting not deer shooting as it was 15 years ago. If there are no deer where you hunt, scout a new area or scout period. My guess is you'll find more deer than you expect. I didn't see many deer during the gun hunt but they were there; I saw them all summer and fall. I'm seeing them now after the gun season too but I'm not sure where they were.
Keep looking, you'll find them.

Same thing happened in our group. We went a couple of days with only seeing a few and some guys were complaining about the lack of deer in the area. Then we drove a nasty evergreen swamp and chased out over 40 from only 60 acres.
The deer kill numbers are based on actual tags and registration- they are real.
I do see how the number could be high....I hunted about 10 miles from a buddies land. Only saw 10 deer in 5 days during regular season. During the antlerless season he invites me out and we kick up 60 plus deer in a drive. Shot 9 of them total for group (I shot 1). In just the 3 days they killed 16 antlerless. This seems like a lot but these guys are strict QDM and the deer are just stacked. Would never believe it unless I saw it for my self. Needless to say this was a good lesson. Some places are overloaded while others have few.
Having talked to alot of people since the end of gun deer season, I just can't see how the deer kill was up 20% in the county i hunt in. I have come to the conclusion that either the DNR is making up numbers or people are lieing about how many deer they kill. I think it is more of the second. They used to brag about how many deer they shot, but now they have wisened up and keep their mouth shut.
