I am looking to get started in trapping this year. Most people learn from someone else, but I don't have that luxury. Has anyone ever heard of a trapping class? I have learned quite a bit from books and online sources, but nothing can compare to seeing it done first hand. I would even be willing to trade my first couple weeks worth of pelts for a good education. If there is anyone in central wi that would be able to help get me started, please let me know. Thank you!

I took the trapping class a couple weeks ago. I would strongly recommend it, plus I think it is a requirement for your trapping license.

The guys training/teaching the course are awesome. All provide contact information for future questions, you get to do real trapping and skinning, a place to stay plus meals for 20bucks. Can't go wrong - I took it at Sandhill.

Id highly recommend drowning them on a slide wire if possible. Ive drown coon in as little as 10 inches of water by cutting my chain down to one or two links. this way they don't have time to work the stake out and if they do they tangled up in the bushes. this also makes tending the line in the morning a lot faster, your pocket sets aren't destroyed, you don't have to deal with dispatching coons and you don't have to worry about coons pulling out. its a little more work to set up but it will save you valuable time in the long run.

I've had coon pull 12in. rebar stakes out. I went with 16 to 18in. stakes with no trouble. That was on a dog proof trap, front foot catch.

Hey guys I am trapping two spots this year one for yotes and one for coons along a stretch of river. I will be using Duke dog proof traps. For coons I should'nt have to double stake them will I?? I am using 12 inch for coons and 18 inch duck bill disposable stakes for yotes. And plain wire when I can use existing structures for coons.

I was looking at some of the trapping class in oconto county and it says it starts at 8 am on Saturday and Sunday. How long does the class last? Also what do they do in the class? A description would be great.

Thanks jake

hi jared as a fellow Jerrod (my full name) Id love to help you get started. How ever i think im a bit out of you area. fell free to pm me if you have any questions on getting started. Just remember keep it simple to start with. your basic pocket set at waters edge with a chunk of carp and some fish oil will take a lot of coon some mink and muskrats. If you got ponds or streams keep an eye out for those muskrat den entrances a 110 coni or colony trap up tight to the opening will fill those fur stretchers. Now getting into the predators is were it gets tricky. Id definitely look into a predator trapping video. Check out any of the trapping supply dealers on the web. Funke trap tag company, Schmidt enterprises, ex.ex. good luck this year hope i can be of some help for you. Remember trapping can be a really tireing hobby but its so rewarding when everything works out and you find that coon, mink, or fox sitting there in the trap in the morning.

If you go to the dnr website it will give you a list of trapping classes throughout the state. I am going to be taking one of the classes in about a month.

That is what got me thinking about trapping...seeing all the different game along the streams. I will be taking the class in August. I think it would be a nice change from all the predator hunting I do in winter.

Part of getting a trapping license is attending a weekend trapping class. The one I went to was in Babcock. Very informational.

The interesting game: otters and fishers require about 3 points. bobcats about 7. Most of my catch are coons. I bagged my first fox last fall.

I trap along the trout stream in the backyard.

The coyotes are smart. I have not bagged one yet. I do have a otter den. Trapping helps me better understand what lives around the stream. Beavers come and go. Otters only use the den in the winter. I'm not sure about the fisher.

Trapping gets me out of the house after gun deer season and is a nice change from ice fishing.
