Catching nice sized pike takes patients. From what I have found lakes that generally have a lower pike population have a lot nicer fish, since there is not as much competition for food, and also less fishing pressure for them. I do all my pike fishing through the ice, but I will sit DAYS AND DAYS without a single flag, but when you finally do get a hit it is worth it knowing it could be a 20 pounder. A lot of the lakes I fish for big pike are not even supposed to have pike in them according to DNR maps.
And big water does not necessarily mean big pike. I have caught 7 pike over the past few years over 40" and none of them have came from a lake bigger than 200 acres.
I know it's not near Wapaca but if you're ever near this part of the state...
Try one of the Mississippi fishing floats near Lock & Dam 8 & 9; I was on the "The Best Dam Fishing Float" @ Dresbach and seen guys pulling in massive Pike on shiners. In Genoa it's "Clements Fishing Barge".
Try a guide service; they know the river and most lakes, and where/how to catch pike and what to use. I recommend Peck's Pool 9 Guide Service—563-544-4611.
Read some of the "Fishing Reports" on this site and you'll see stuff about pike too.
My personal success against pike has been from Mepps spinners, and the ole hook and shiner.
Best of luck!
