Green Bay, WI area. I'm looking to get into the fine sport of waterfowl hunting. Yes there is a lot of great resources here on this site but I'm looking for a site that is directly dedicated to the sport. Can anyone point me in the right direction?? Or perhaps to a site that has a lot of reading I can do to get better acquainted with the sport? I know I need to do my research before anything. I appreicate the insight. PS Yes I'm away of the regulations as reading material.

I would guess they are old and probaly worth something to the right person. I would find a antique dealer or do some googling searching and see what you can come up with. Out of all of the possibilities, would not hunt over them. I would put them on the wall or book shelf or sell them to get some newer modern decoys.

They are no Million dollar decoys, but are nice wall hangers. If your going to use em. I'd take someone up on the offer of trading for some newer blocks. I'd trade you a few dozen for them myself. But keeping them as a display item paying homage to great seasons past. Would be more appropriate than gunning and beating the snot outta them!

Sell them to the marine or make him bring ya a dozen nice mallard dekes. Dont paint them, you will just wreck a legacy. the marine will get you a dozen dekes for them.

I would advise you not to get into this sport. Not cause it is barbaric or not moral. But it will eat you up. Duck hunting forever!

I got a buck gardner getting started calling cd and would play it in the truck as a drive. Call in hand of course. Roll the windows down and practice away. There is no substitute for real life experience. Just be respectful and know the regulations.

I can't believe no one mentioned Duckhuntingchat.com. WAY better than the Refuge IMO. Not many people from Wisconsin but tons of knowledge to be had all the same.

I like to shoot trap a couple times a year. Went out a couple weeks ago to J&H in Navarino and shot a 38/50. Would have been in the 40s but friends don't know how to push a button to release the birds. Had 4 stations where they didn't throw the second bird right away and threw me off my game!

thank you all for the wonderful advice and pointers.

I can't wait to get out there! then I can't wait to train my dog and get him out there while I watch him do his thing!

If you have time and a course close by, shoot some skeet. That will get you going on swing'n the gun. Plus, it's a whole lot of fun! Your choice but you can read all the books you want. My advice is to get out there with someone who knows what they are REALLY doing, when it comes to waterfowl hunting and ask a lot of questions and listen. I would also suggest that you get around someone who knows how to run a call and practice with them also! That's so when you get out there, you're call doesn't sound like a cat that got it's privates stuck in a vise! (LOL) Besides, you may end up making a really good new friend and it will be a whole lot of fun! Cause it's supposed to be fun! Good Luck Big Smile

Check your library for books on the subject. Or search on amazon and buy some books about duck hunting. There are a lot of "how-to" and good stuff like that out there. IMO, magazines are ok but they do not teach you very much in issues.

Thanks again for all the great tips. I'd like to do some small water hunting and field hunting. I've got access to a couple hundred acres of land in Shawano Co where I lease some deer hunting land and a few hundred more in Brown Co where my grandparent's own a farm. Hell, my uncles just go out in the cow pasture and can shoot geese all season! Just a small pond on the Shawano property but really haven't seen many ducks.

For some odd reason I've liked ducks since I was a kid and would love to put my first on one the wall.

I have to agree most with Johnny. Just get out there and do it. You can read about waterfowl to get the basics but until you actually go out and watch what the birds are doing, and how they respond to your spread, calling, etc., reading won't help all that much. Plus a lot of the articles you will read will be that writer's personal opinion. Get a few mallard decoys, a duck call or two, and your ready to kill some ducks. Hunted with an 870 since I was 12 (26 now) and had no issues. My buddy also used an 870 smooth bore and hit em no problem. Anything else you want to know, just PM me!
