I use to blow a flute but now all I blow is short reeds. There is so much more you can do with ithem. Don't get me wrong flutes are great. My buddie Gander blows a flute and he can do some things with a flute that most people can't. Hand warmers are a must in the late season. Don't wear gloves blowing calls. A great call around a 100.00 is the mortal sin from straight down game calls. If you have him shave the reed its even better and you can blow it with one hand.
Short reed calls can produce a wider variety of sounds and more realistic tones than flute style calls. It's also nice to not have a foot long call on your lanyard. Any call will sound worse with gloves, short reed, flute, duck calls, they all sound muffled and unrealistic. The unfortunate reality of waterfowl hunting is that if you want to sound good late season you're going to have cold hands.
I'm resurrecting this post from the dead. My old flute call finally gave out on me last season. I decided to make the change from a flute to a short reed (Zink call of death), and it was tough at first but once I got the hang of it I was impressed.......until now.
On cold hunts I'm now doubting my switch from a flute to a short reed. I can't call worth a damn with gloves on and that makes it really difficult this time of year. Taking my gloves off every time to use the call is getting ridiculous. Anyone else have this problem? I'm now thinking I need both.
