I want to mention one IMPORTANT thing... spool your line on your reels full. There is a mark on the spool. If the reels aren't full, you will not get true readings on the line counter.

I use 15lb Power Pro...my thoughts on it...it reflects things on the end (fish, weeds, etc.) more precisely than mono, but you have to double wrap it to keep it from coming off as its slippery. I have had some come off when going into rough wind, but I try to go WITH the wind and I have much less hassle...I avoid trolling against any wind of any consequence, because I'll have the consequences. One negative of power pro is that with some wind it transmits the wave action to the lures more abruptly than mono, which is more foregiving...this can be good when fish are active, but if they are wanting subtle presentations, mono may be better. Another thing, I have mono on one and Power Pro on the others, just to compare...I find the mono stretches more, so that board runs further back, which you have to notice and get used to or you keep checking it unnecessarily. ... All this from such a little brain!

I set all my trolling reels up with 12# Big Game and a 14# fluorocarbon leader. With that set up I don't think I've broke off because of a fish yet this season, rocks are a different story though.

Its also important to remember that your trolling line takes a lot of abuse, you need to be sure to check your line periodically for nicks and cut off any bad line.

I use 30lb.Power Pro with a 3/8 white or yellow jighead with W or Y 3" twisty tail grub in Northern Canada.Another tip,if there's large Northern in the lake you might concider adding a steel leader. The grub was slammed by a large Northern last year and I didn't have a leader on.I only hope he had fun passing the jighead and grub later on.

I too use the 12# Big Game in solar green. Tough as nails and I can respool 6 reels for under $20.

I use 14lb. Berkley Fireline for my reels and 20lb. Fireline for my harnesses. I use this stuff because you can get many years out of it before it rots and the line doesn't weaken where the blade spins on it.

I use 14lb trilene xl green with 17lb vanish for the harnesses. Never had a break either. As far as dive curves, I let the fish tell me where they want it.

Fishmunkee nailed it! 12lb Big Game, same diameter of 10lb XT (so the dive charts are accurate) and cheaper. Plus it has a little more stretch which you want for a trolling line that you use boards on so you don't loose as many before you get the board off.

Big Game 12# has the same diameter as 10# Trilene XT. Plus it's cheaper.

I never was a fan of backing when using mono....Break offs are not an issue at all. I use a Floro leader in some situations but its rare.

Is there a need for a backing or leader when you use that trilene xt, do you have many break offs from snags?
