I've been thinking of heading out after the kids goto bed, which is 8 o'clock. The wife will be home with them. Wondering if I should even bother. I know it depends on the lake I'm on, but just wondering how many eyes are caught later in the night/early morn. I have a 5 inch auger with my 18 volt cordless drill, LOVE IT! I do have a 10" gas,but not liking the noice at night. I'm more of a panfisherman, but want to exspandinto walleye fishin, during the week. Any info would be greatly appreciated. And I'm always looking for fishin buddies, so if interested, shoot me a message, I don't check it everyday. But weekly. Thanks and tight lines

I second that. My biggest walleyes through the ice have come between 11pm and 2am. Depending on the lake I would try everywhere from deep flats to shallow weeds. In one night on Lake Arrowhead in Adams county about 4 years ago I caught 3 walleyes over 26 inches. One came in 5 fow over weeds, another came from the weedline in 15 fow, and the biggest came in 28 fow in the channel. Shallow flats and weedlines are a good spot to start though. Just remember as the winter rolls on fish generally head deeper. They will move shallower to feed normally but shallow is relative. If they move from 15 fow to 8 fow that is shallow. But it they are sitting in 50 fow on mud flats by day, then 25 fow might be shallow depending on what kind of structure you are on.

When you get out. Drill ALL of the holes you will need for the night. As the night goes on you don't want to be spooking fish by popping more holes. Especially shallow water. I have seen it where someone is catching eyes like crazy in 3-6 fow on a sand bar on the Wisconsin river and then someone decides to drill a couple holes. The fish shut completely off for over an hour.

Especially during the winter we have great luck catching walleyes at night. This is mostly because the water is much clearer during the winter than during the open water period.

When fishing for walleyes at night we usually set tip ups baited with shiners over shallow rock piles or weed beds where the walleyes go to feed. It is important to keep noise to a minimum and to avoid shinning any lights down the holes.

Catching them isn't really the problem you have to find them and learn how to stay on top of them

Can't hurt to try.

I can guarantee you that you won't catch any fish sitting at home on the couch.
