Building crawler harnesses
2/19/13 @ 6:50 PM
I'm looking to build my own crawler harnesses for the upcoming season. Just curious as to what others use as far as 2 or 3 hook set ups and distance in between hooks.
I was thinking about using 2 hooks and spacing them 6" apart. I'd appreciate any input. Thanks!

6" is a bit too far apart - I've been fishing days where the walleyes will only take half a crawler instead of a full one, and your trail hook won't be much good then.
I only tie 2-hook leaders, but if you lose the trail hook, you need to put on a new leader. The benefit of a 3-hook leader is you still have 2 hooks to keep fishing if you lose the trailer.
I only use two hook set-ups and space my hooks approx. 3" apart.17lb. flourocarbon approx. 36" long.#4 or #5 blades. I also 95% of the time use a small treble hook on the back verses a single hook. Your hook up percentage goes way up and usually when trolling open water snags are minimal. The only time I go to a single back hook is when trolling over weedbeds or some other high snag areas. Hope this helps.
I like # 2 hooks with a #5 spinner for Green Bay, I use fluorocarbon leaders approximate 40 in length, and space 2 hooks 4 inches apart sometimes the fish hit short and you have to clip off the tail of the crawler as for Bago go with a 3 or 4 blade use fluorocarbon leaders it costs more but it's very abrasive and invisible
I use at least 12# mono... I don't realy think of harnesses as a stealth presentation so why use fluoro? I also am becoming partial to thin wire hooks since I fish L Wis and can pull those hooks off the wood snags more often than if they were the Gamo octopus hooks and just bend them back to shape. Never had a problem with a fish bending one out.
I made a couple harnesses last summer to use around Green Bay. I spaced the hooks 4" apart. One day we had huge crawlers that had tails dragging several inches behind the hook. Consequently we had many bites with just the tail missing. I wondered if it would be better to build a longer harness or simply pinch that long tail off.
made harnessess lasts spring. was really fun. stole some beeds from the kids and some i had. used 10 lb flouro, 2 #6 octo hooks spaced 4 inches apart sneel tied. started using them when the water reached around 60 degrees. very deadly, caught limits of walleye every time out. caught fish on all that i made. used reds, greens, and yellows in the beeds and floats. spinners in gold and silver.
