Got out last weekend for a couple hours. Flushed 3...1 for 1 shooting. On the board for 2012. Found the birds on a transition in the pines.

Returned Sunday from 1 1/2 weeks grouse and duck hunting with my son and uncle. Lots of ducks but most flying before or after shooting hours due to clear weather. We still shot a fair amount jump shooting small ponds/rivers. The grouse numbers are great (last year poor?)fushed 2 groups of 6 a couple of 4 and more 1s and 2s than I could count. My son and shot enough for a few good meals last week and brought back a few. My uncle was 0-14 with a few we let him try to ground swat Crying I filled my turkey tag (easy) Saw tons of deer with 6 being bucks, and a bobcat one morning....................great week!!!!

Up to the Wabeno area last weekend. Saw and heard fewer birds, maybe because of the snow. Beautiful, but tough walking. Snow started melting Saturday afternoon, but still an inch or so in the woods on Sunday.

Up again last weekend and 3 more birds. Great weather. Birds a little more skittish. Hunted some new areas in the Wabeno area. Found most of the birds in pretty tough cover-new growth near evergreens.

Hunted the Wabeno area over the weekend. Got 8 shots off and 3 birds. Wind helped the pointing dogs as the bird sat a little tighter. NIce weather for walking. Leaves are no longer a factor. Dogs also pointed two woodcock, which I did not shoot at (don't like the taste of them). All in all a great weekend in God's Country!

I have hunted SE of Argonne the past 2 weekends and my usual can't miss spots (usually only hit them 2-3 times a year) have been void of grouse and woodcock. The popple age class isn't that old and has pines near water. Starting to explore for new spots.

Anybody been hunting in the Argonne area? Got a 4 day weekend coming up in 2 weeks and I'll be at the cabin. It's been a long year busy year, first chance i've had to get away. Can't wait.

late report from last weekend hunting ducks/grouse. Lots of ducks around.I did not see one bird in 3 days. Spent the better part of 2 days helping a buddy look for his lost Lab. Put a ton of miles on the truck in great bird country looking for the lost mutt. It was raining a good amount of the time , but I should have seen at least 50 birds. My son stayed up the whole week and got into the birds Tuesday(sunny) and shot 3. I'll get the full report when he gets home and post the type of cover he saw the most birds...............rikj Almost forgot he found the dog Monday about a mile and a half from where it jumped out of the boat saturday night. Long nights for my buddy spent sleeping in the woods Sat. and Sunday night.

Thanks paddy!! That is the plant (sweet fern), I did a google search on it and the pictures matched up perfectly with the plant. The birds were on the edge of an old gravel pit / wildlife clearing with plenty of sun and sand/gravel. I bumped into another hunter I know in the woods Saturday morning and showed him the sweet fern plant. He didn't know what it was but he uses it for cover scent when bowhunting. Edit: Their are some real slobs leaving garbage in the woods this fall. I noticed a bed headboard and 2 couches about 1/2 mile away. The next day I found 2 rolls of carpet in a different area. Saturday a big pile of beer cans, my nephew lost his cell phone picking up cans and tossing them into my truck. He found it latter after it had been rained on Crying

That sounds like sweet fern rick, though the plant can grow to 18 inches or so. It grows mostly in sandy soils.

Cleaned 2 birds Friday that had green fern like leaves packed in their crops, the plants are about 6" tall and they smell like sage. Anyone know what it is??? The birds were a little spooky and I didn't have the dog. Rain Saturday and today didn't help. I saw a doe and 2 fawns and a nice buck friday(A rare sight in Forest County)

I hunted southern Forest Co. for the last 10 days or so with OK luck on grouse. I got a bird or 2 each day and 3 one day. Lost a few days of hunting with the heavy rain and wind. I would guess over half of the leaves are down and the weeds are dying back(24F Sunday morning). Hunted ducks and only did well 2 days,a few wood ducks some mallards and 1 goose. Not many ducks or duck hunters if you can judge by the lack of shooting in the early morning and evenings. I saw allot of turkeys a bear a few deer and my first bobcat. Plenty of deer ticks on the dog, I had a couple on me also and now have a nasty looking dark red spot on my back that needs to be checked out.

Grouse-wild rice and oyster mushrooms for supper again tonight.........It don't get any better Tounge Out
