Wisconsin Grouse - How Far South
4/10/13 @ 11:30 AM
I was just assigned a new job at work. I will now be working as far north as Green Bay, Eau Claire and Wausau. I'm thinking I can bring my gear up and hunt on the way back south heading home. Most of my grouse hunting takes place north of 70. Anybody have much luck further south? Not looking for your secret spots. Just wondering if it's worth an overnight and lugging the gear and dog up when I am working during the week.

I have also seen grouse in southern Adams county and have hunted them there as well. Also I have hunted them around the La Crosse area. I used to live in Waushara county between Hancock and Coloma and has some awesome grouse hunts on public land there.
Fall Creek area used to be great when I was a kid....probably tough to find a spot these days though.
Antigo area (re. Wausau) has lots of birds and some good public land.
Farthest South I've personally seen grouse is Northern Marquette County...not very many either. However, in the exact same spot I saw a flock of several hundred woodcock roll through on migration a couple of years ago while bowhunting one evening. The next morning was fun....to say the least!!!
Clark County forest is a good tip, IMO. Chippewa County Forest can be good too.
I do all of my grouse hunting south of the Stevens Point area. If you find the right spots there are a lot of birds to be found without much hunting pressure for them.
