Could not find them specifically listed. So would fall under the unprotected species needing a license to harvest that allows taking of small game.
Can't stand them myself either. Every year end up pulling thousands of quills out of dogs. Not fun at all. Sometimes just a few, others it will take hours to get them pulled out. That and a couple of people to hold the dog. Never a fun time for anyone!!! Would think one time would be enough for a dog to learn. Yet, some form a hatred and try to kill them all. What a mess!!!
Was told by a guide that they are protected as a "clean food" source for wilderness survival. Apparently they can be eaten raw so the DNR protects them. Doesn't make much sense to me. My Weimaraner tangled with a porky in 2011 while grouse hunting. Probably a couple hundred quills in her face and mouth. I pulled em all but it took about an hour. Thankfully, she was OK. We actually hunted the rest of the day and she pointed and retrieved a couple more birds for me. I am thankful it wasn't worse. Think she learned her lesson. In October, we had a big fattie jump up in front of us and she stayed put.
I blasted the one that stuck her the previous season when he came waddling back up the path toward us.
Whywork - that picture was taken by me. My brother's dog. He is now in doggy heaven because of the incident - I had to put him down last winter.
Shoot every last one you see. I am willing to bet they have killed as many dogs as wolves in the state. The quills you don't pull out will work there way into the cavity of the dog. Not a good thing.
As far as I know, they are not a protected species.
