I'm going with the bow Friday. Set the decoy at 10 steps and if he is more than 10 steps past that, too bad so sad. Haha.

Mike - I don't disagree with the energy - a #5 shot can be leathel out to 60 yards, but I have yet to see a gun/choke that can pattern that well to be considered anything more than lucky past 50 or so yards. If your pattern is better than I can produce, please share what you are usingSmile. I think you would agree, at 86 yards you had a lucky BB or two that hit the right spots.

Agree on the question of 55 yards. I have spent a ton of money and time figuring out how far I can reach out. With using Heavy shot 3-1/2", #5's and a 0.669 choke, I still hold a decent pattern to get 9-12 BB's in the kill zone (spine and head) at 50 yards. From there it is just luck. 40 yards the pattern is amazing, but quickly spreads after that. I am terrible at guessing range so my range finder is always tied to my neck. Would like to know what you are using if getting a better range than me.

Nice bird and great pic Down2erth. I'll be out tomorrow morning in the northeastern edge of your county. I have got to say though, that is one of the coolest pics I have seen.

Shot this one Saturday morning at about 9:15. Had been stalking this bird for about 45 minutes but could never get him to leave the hen he was with. We lost track of him when he stopped gobbling and were walking back to the truck when he took off flying down the path we were walking on. I was able to take him at 30 yards out and he crumpled and then crashed into a tree. 18 lbs. with a 10 1/8" beard and 1 1/8" spurs.

I've taken three toms so far this spring toward my limit of four bearded birds. The first one (no pictures) was a 1" bearded jake that weighed in at a whopping 12 pounds! But I'd been hunting for two weeks and this was the first tom I'd called into range.

The second bird weighed in at 24 lbs., 14 oz., had one inch spurs and a nine inch beard.

The third bird weighed 18 1/2 pounds, had 7/8 inch spurs and a 9.5 inch beard.

Friday the 13th. Smoked turkey, Pyrodex style! After having a misfire in the morning on a nice tom that came in quiet, I reloaded and went back out for the evening and set up near the roost. This tom came in 5 minutes before dark and before he came into range he decided to fly up into a tree behind me. I took him on the wing at 20 yards! Last time I will shoot a bird flying though, caught him under near-side wing and about destroyed one breast.
