Turkey Hunting
Last ditch effort help
4/15/13 @ 4:15 PM
Appreciate any quick help I finally get to go tomorrow the last day, I'm planning on roosting the birds tonight. What has worked best for you? Glassing fields, owl call from the road, turkey call from the road, or calling from the field itself?? Or any other methods? Thanks so much!

Roosting the birds? You mean you know exactly where they roosting? If so, Id get close to the point and try to be between them and a food source. If it were me, Id get there well before the time that they fly down. I was scouting Saturday on public land and was easily able to get within 100 yards. From there Id give a few small clucks to let them know you are there but leave it at that. They dont have to gobble back to know where you called from. The birds I watch Saturday only gobbled once. They did however fly down right in front looking for the hen.
I would not suggest glassing from the road...Get to the field...get set up and wait. No sense in trying to move in when they are already down on the ground. Move in before and then youll be there when they show up. Id go to glassing after you have given it a try and nothing shows up.
Finally, as stated earlier they may not gobble at all. If you know they are there wait them out. Ive seen a lot of birds and very little strutting activity so far.
If all fails I usually walk around and use a combo of the a sharp yelp/cluck and/or a crow call to get response. I tend to be fairly vocal if "searching" for a gobbler. Give them the shock call and let them give themselves away. However, I would not suggest this if you already know where they are roosting.
