What is better in your opinion? Homemade smoker from a freezer or one built from wood, like the size of an outhouse or slightly smaller? I have plenty of wood around to build one from the ground up. I finally have time for a project for myself..

Thanks for your time!!! Paul

I haven't started yet. Have been busy, doing small jobs to buy Humminbird 898c si..... Got it 3 weeks ago and love it.... Just so much todo in the fall...... Found an old freezer, that could be made into a smoker... not sure when or what I'll make....

Any update H2O? Looking at the same project. Have most of the materials already for either one. I'm interested to hear your outcome with the wooden one.

Thanks

I like this smoker. 120#'s dressed weight. Smoked with Cherry wood/slow cooked for 11 hrs. with home made BBQ sauce. Let the Red Neck Games begin.

Yes, that is an old fuel oil tank converted to a pig roaster.

H20...got an update? Some of the nicest looking smokers I've ever seen are wood smoke houses..just beautiful. Sounds like you have the materials and the skills to make that happen. Like swamp said, keep in mind insulation for colder temps. Lookin' forward to seeing some pics.

Paul, if you go with a wood smoker I would put the pipe out the back as high as you can. I put mine out the top & when she's cooking I get this black drippings & it lands on the fish. Just a idea!

I made mine out of two steel drums that were used for transporting Vegetable Oil. I ordered a barrel stove kit from Cabela's. The kit is manufactured by Vogelzang i believe.

Couple bored weeks during the winter and i was able to build it with just a 4.5" Grinder, Sawz-all, and Drill.

Next one i am gonna obtain access to a torch.

This is a wood burning Double Barrel Smoker, and i think you can find many similar to it if you just search Google. The smokering forum has a lot of neat discussions over homemade smokers too.

I too like Gator's new toy...Mine will be a little more heavy duty, and can double as a BBQ grill if you wanna save space.

Just ran Charcoals last night for beer butt chicken and maintain 350 degrees for 2 hours without touching anything.

hey paul, it depends on how much you want to smoke at once,if you plan on doing 12 turkeys or 10 pork bellies at a time you need big, keep in mind, a wood unit is hard to keep temp when its freezing out, insulated fridge, keeps temp when cold out, however your limited to space and size...good luck and happy smokin Big Smile

Paul, I had both types of smokers. The last one is the best for me. Small one like a out house. Works just GREAT!! Made out of wood. Didn't take long to make & doesn't take long to smoke.
