Try trolling Bucher top raiders or if you want a lil smaller presentation, whopper ploppers. I had a big pike hit a top raider trolling two years ago. I got him to the boat and he spit the hook on me. Torpedos are a bit small and have too small of blades for my taste. Top raiders and whoppers will have a nice plop to em. Draws big pike, muskies, and even big bass.
I would say troll whenever you get the chance. Probably better earlier in the year when there is less weeds to hang up. I have trolled mid summer though if we were moving from spot to spot. Catch many fish doing that actually. Usually original floating rapalas normally.
As far as topwater. I used heddon torpedoes when trolling topwater. Not many poeple would troll topwater but I definitly have had some good success with it. Whats good about the tordepeos is they track straight and you can bend the blades for different speeds and they float if you need to stop the boat for any reason.
Got some of my biggest fish of the year trolling in a canoe on small lakes with 2 rods....
