Still a little early by me, ice just went out less than a week ago water temps still around 47f last Saturday still had a little bit of slushy ice still floating around nothing was up shallow. Need another week or so of warm weather to kick start it. Fish shallow bays and channels on the north side.

Find the right lake near you and hit it right now. Took well over 100 crappies on 3/15 in the shallows on a southern WI lake. Majority of fish were smaller 8-9" but took 21 home that were 10.5-11"(didnt get alot of fillets ice fishing this year). Small ice jig and plastic under a tiny float tight to structure. Temps as high as 58 degrees in the shallows I was fishing. Guys who wait too long this year are gonna miss out.

One good place to check at this time would be boat channels, launch areas as they have shallow water and warm up very quickly was in one yesterday and the temp was 60 or so and the main lake was around 48,50.

This time of year temp is the key. They will move shallow to get into warmer water. This has nothing to do with spawning but simply a matter of comfort. They find water that has comfortable temps and the food will be there too. It does not have to be a big temp difference. Often a couple of degrees is enough. Even in a big bay there is usually 1 or 2 spots that has a little warmer water than the rest, that's where they will be.

Don't live in WI, but where i'm at the crappie don't stop biting very often just have to find the pattern they are in. Like deerskin said, no calendar needed! right now our fish are scattered due to warm weather, and if it keeps it up we will see an early spawn this year! Sunday caught fish fishing 3 ft. deep. Water temps have been in the 50's. But that is on Rend Lake in southern IL.
