how deep is to deep?

when they say, "fish for crappie in the deep basin." how deep is to deep? 50? 60? fow

If the lake is big enough and deep enough, look for a thermocline. I have caught bluegills hugging the bottom in 50 fow.

The lake I fish is 50 feet deep. I never see any fish suspend. I have seen crappies about 6 feet off the bottom. But only once, during low pressure just before dark. If fishing in less than 10 feet of water, anything goes. But once you fish the deep water, they are on bottom or a foot or two above it. I have caught trout cruising just below the ice. That is what I see on the vexilar. Trouter

Yes, if there are zooplankton suspended in the water column Crappie will be literally anywhere in the lake during the winter. Total depth isn't really an important factor, the depth of the zooplankton bands is more important

Deep is deep. It depends on where the fish are suspended. No way to really tell without a good fish finder.
