Musky Fishing
Suckers in the spring??
4/29/12 @ 9:42 AM
The opener is approaching and im extremely excited to get out there. This will be my first opener targeting specifically muskies. I was wondering, since small baits have a reputation to out produce larger baits in the spring, what about using small suckers?? like 5-10"?? This is small compared to the 16" ones we were using last fall but having never gone after muskies in the spring i dont know what to expect.
I planned on soaking a sucker starting off with a 12" and down sizing untill i get some action. I figured its worth a shot and if they produce half as well in the spring as in the fall it will be worth it. Besides ill be casting with my rod so i can figure out alittle faster roughly what size is best.
What about where to place the sucker?? like depth or structure...any help is appreciated folks!!

Um... let me see, using their real food will it work???? Of course that will work. But the main reason we downsize in the spring, its to get more action. Smaller male muskies are more active at this time than the larger females. I do know guys target just big fish and they use BIG baits to do do. They maybe get one bite or none, but it will be from bigger fish. So you can hit both by throwing a small bait and hanging a big sausage off the edge of the boat. You are covering both bases
Good Luck
