early in the year it not a match the hatch kinda approach its more of match the activity level if the fish arent in the mood to take on a big bait then smaller ones will work best and visa versa. really its like that all season... my biggest tip is learn every lure you have and figure out what you can make those lures do to make a fish bite

12 inch DDD's, large Hellhounds, 10 or 13 inch Jakes, etc. It's also about the only time of year I'll use pounders or two pounders. After that it's mag dawgs. That whole "match the hatch" thing is silly this time of year. The typical thought process is "matching this year's hatch." Hmmm...are the perch that hatched this spring going to be 6 inches long yet? How about the walleyes? Shiners? Nope, they won't be. If anything I'll start with bigger baits in the spring and downsize as the season goes on only to start going bigger again when it gets real late into the fall. Size is about the fourth or fifth consideration. Using a bait that is versatile is far, far above that on the list. Give me a crankbait I can make glide, give me a glide bait I can work as a surface bait, give me something that I can manipulate based on the attitude of the fish. Surface baits don't work in the spring. Wink

I have had good luck with small bass/pike sized lures but I have also had good luck with large, slow 10 inch + lures. When the big muskies are done spawning they don't have a lot of energy so they want to get a meal with as little effort as possible.

thats a very good question ...typicaly big bass sized lures , bucktails, spinnerbaits, jerkbaits, crainkbaits in the 4-7 inch size is always a good bet but this opener is goin to be weird like the last guy said we might be fishing weedbeds and a early summer patturn but the waether in the next month and a half will determin that ask again a week before season and youll get a better answere from everyone Smile Smile

Gonna be a tough opener down here in southeastern Wisconsin, in my opinion. This is going to be an early spring and an early spawn. And if the cold weather ever kicks in, it could greatly mess up the muskie spawn. If the warm weather stays, the muskies could be in almost a summer pattern by the opener. Weeds could be quite green. Fish could be shallow, on weed edges, or deep chasing baitfish. It is going to take a little time to figure them out.
