ok, i want all you deer hunters opinions on this..... In northern Illinois for the past month and a half there has been so called "sharpshooters" in our forest preserves and some provate properties. Theyve done it for atleast 3 or 4 years. There slaughtering the deer to test for CWD. The people who are the so called "sharpshooters" are employees of a local golf course who are hired by the state to sit in the forest preserves with lights and over baited areas with high powered rifles and are supposed to shoot any deer they see. They also are using HELICOPTERS to fly low around the forest preserves and round all the deer up so they can all unload on them.....There telling the public that there only taking 250 or so deer when they do this, yet some of the local processors are saying there taking alot more deer then there saying......they also say that most of the deer that are coming in have 2 or 3 shots in them....Now these sharpshooters are supposed to be good shots, right? WRONG last year me and a buddy were walking through one of the forest preserves and saw 3 deer who had one leg that was just shattered, we could get within 5 feet of them and they couldnt move very fast at all. Your probably thinkin, well it couldve been a car......no cars dont put holes in the sides of a deers shoulder..... Angry NOW i just want all you deer hunters opinions on this sharpshooting.......there breaking every rule in the book, and the deer population is gettin severly damaged when there shooting everything from yearlings to monster bucks.....its gettin ridiculous and it needs to stop, why not just let the archery season go longer??? So do you agree with me or no........ Wondering

Why don't the DNR let bow hunters hunt in the Forest Preserves?? Do a back ground check. check for FOID cards. Take a safety class. SHOOT SAFELY. Make us shoot our bows and see that we accurate and proficient.SHOOT SAFELY. Build and Bait Stands. Mark and post secluded areas. Only let us hunt on Very Specific days. And specific times. SHOOT SAFELY. Sun up to 9am?????????

What is another way that would make bow and arrows MORE lethal???????????

I am not worried about shooting someone walking through the woods. I am worried that someone would Wack Bambi and it would take of runnin and end up in someones front yard while mommy is puttin suzzy and jr in the mommy van. That would be a bad seen. And you know someone would get VIDEO of it.

I couldn't agree more. fact of the matter is that it really has nothing to do with cwd. $ that is $ of insurance companys that WANT the deer off the roads. it is wrong what 'they are doing, but mostly us 'hunters complain to one another about it. something needs and should be done to stop this. there is a handicap hunt at Rock Cut State Park every fall. pretty wonderful deal for handicap hunters...they come from a long ways to hunt. so the dnr comes along, shot most of the deer. they only harvested I believe 5 deer last fall. good deal huh? why is the "dnr able to do whatever they wish? they are accountable to no one?

About 15 years ago, before CWD was discovered, I was employeed by DuPage CO. Forest Preserve, at that time, the sharpshooters were dept. employees that had to pass a farily strict shooting qualification. The shooters were taken off their normal duties for approx. 1 month, generally December. Most shots were well placed and the animals dropped on the spot. That was with the use of trucks, spotlights and bait piles. The deer were really overpopulated back then, no helicopters were used. That was 15 years ago in DuPage County, I don't know what the procedure is now. Back then it was well organized and all the meat went to food pantries. I'm sure glad I moved 300 miles north, its a different life style.

Kate, this is just one of thousands of reasons why, even though I live in Illinois, I don't waste my time hunting here, The Wisconsin border is a mere 9 miles from my house.

" Sharp Shooters" get paid per deer to do it. What bothers me most is since the DNR has started paying people to kill deer by the hundreds They have also Raised the Price of Tags and Hunting Licenses it's getting expensive. How is this Fair ? How is it Fair Chase over Bait at night ? A Big Thanks to the Illinois DNR for Raising Tag Prices and Removing Deer......................- Kate

the only problem with EAB skees is that the people in Wisconsin that i know that hunt alot up there saw very few if ANY deer this year. ive never personally hunted up there but there blaming it on the EAB cause all the does are getting blasted, and we both know if the does are gettin whacked there wont be any deer being born. Like i said just what ive heard from them i personally dont know what wisconsin is like

As a hunter who deer hunts both WI (in the CWD zone) and IL (McHenry County) I guess I really do not understand the comment below regarding WI. If it is the perception that Earn-a-buck is killing WI deer hunting you are mistaken....at least in the CWD areas. In the years since the WDNR has instituted EAB the quality of bucks has drastically increased as hunters are no longer taking that 1.5 year old buck right away anymore, thus allowing it to possibly mature longer.

In IL, with the genocide that IDNR has been doing, my deer sightings and quality of deer have drastically decreased as has most of my hunting peers. Please note that I am speaking about the area of northern IL that has been sniped for a numer of years now in the name of CWD reduction. These guys/gals are taking out whatever is attracted to the bait piles...be it fawns, does, bucks and ducks (bucks that look like does 'cause their antlers have been shed). The largest buck I saw bow/gun hunting northern IL this past season was a spike. Also, only saw one fawn with a doe....gonna be slow for a while.

I hope there are not too many taken from the bait sites near your hunting area. Good luck!

Extreme northeast winnebago county. I know of at least 6 baiting sites within a 5 mile radius of my home, one of which is right next to the new Willowbrook middle school. If you haven't seen that one it is within shooting distance of the school and I believe it is on school property. Just think of the headlines if something were to happen? I witnessed the annual helicopter flying over Tuesday doing their before the kill estimates. Hope you are not hunting around where I'm at because it's a joke! Puke People who don't live around here or hunt in areas where they are doing this have NO idea how bad this really is.

Yep! Here is what I got at my mailbox Monday. I have already noticed they are setting up bait piles around my hunting area. I did see a few more deer this fall but I had a better crop rotation on the property I hunt. Still, my participation is down due to the lack of deer and my total disgust for the way they are managing the heard in our area. I have not taken a deer in Illinois for 7 years. I must be part of the problem (giving the DNR my money and not doing my job!) Sleepy

Well, are they at it again this year? Didnt see very many deer this year so there shouldnt be any need to take any more Winnebago Co. deer.

The DNR was really cool when I contacted them telling them that I had already paid for my shotgun permit. THey asked if I would like an addtional tag.....h*ll no!!! I told the guy that I had not purchased my archery tag yet and he immediately put 2 and 2 together that the DNR could purchase an archery tag in response to the positive CWD buck I got last year. I received it this weekend!!! Just gotta get the general hunting license and the habitat stamp and wait thru the grueling month of September before getting out.

Did go out to place a camera yesterday and was dissappointed by the lack of sign, but it is early yet.

Thanks Rob. I had not seen this press release. Catch some trout for me out west. Cool

Funny thing happened yesterday. I received a letter from some guy at the DNR regarding the positive deer I got last year. It goes on to say that I will receive a permit in the same manner that I harvested the positive deer last year in August 2010 at no charge. Problem is that I already applied for, paid for and received this tag for 2010. I called and left a VM in regards to this situation yesterday but have not received a message yet. In McHenry county where I hunt there is no possibility that I will see enough deer to fill that many tags in one season. I was lucky to see 3 deer last year. Back in the late 80's that would have been the first :30 of the season!

Hopefully, they will just reimburse me for the permit I have already received and paid for this year. Good luck to everyone this bow and gun season that is quickly approaching!

Mike
