Is there any difference between the smaller spools of flurocarbon leader material and the bigger spools of flurocarbon main line. I am looking to buy some for my tip ups. I thinking about going with 8lb test hoping it might stand up against a small northern while not spooking the walleye i am after.

the big spools are usually flourocarbon coated, which makes the line more castable and usually gives it a lower memory. it is limper and will allow better action on smaller minnows. this type of line is easier for pike to bite through.

small spools are generally pure flouro, higher quality as far as invisibility and resistance to bite-offs, but pure flouro generally has higher memory, so if if is on your tipup spool in storage it will be coily when you unroll it. if this happens, grab the hook in one hand and the other end in the other hand stretch the leader a few times, this will not damage healthy leaders but will eliminate some of the coiling.

i honestly like 20# flouro for both..great in between line size.

as far as spools, how many leaders do you plan on making? i can get a ton of leaders out of a 75yd spool...that is if you arent making 5 foot leaders like some people do.

Yes there is.. Usually the smaller spools are more expensise and come with less yards.. you are getting higher grade floro and some of the cheaper bigger spools are only floro coated. and lower quality....

I have been using 40# this year. I have bitten off one time. Must have been a big gator because by the time I got to the flag the line was bitten clean thru already. barely tripped the flag maybe 3 ft of line taken out. takes some force to bite thru 40# fluoro with zero pressure on the other side of the line...

Pike will bite through 8 pound test like a hot knife through butter... Now sometimes they will get hooked just right where it wont break, but its not worth the risk. I use 40# flourocarbon for pike, which usually comes in 25 yards spools, and have never been bit through. I also use some new stuff on the market called Knot 2 Kinky, which is an unbelievable product that eliminates the problems with steel leaders! Use the 25# or 35# stuff... Heres the Website http://www.aquateko.com/Knot_2_Kinky_Titanium_Fishing_Leader_Wire_s/1.htm Now, there is NO difference between the "spools" except the amount of line on them. If you wanna lose some pike and catch Walleye use 6 to 10 pound flouro. If you wanna catch mostly pike then use the heavier line.. I have had large Walleye hit the 40 pound flouro. Good Luck
