Ice Fishing
Were Not in Kansas Anymore...
1/20/13 @ 8:41 PM
My buddy jiggling deep and I were a mile out yesterday getting our a$$ handed to us by the wind. It was so bad the tip ups blew out the holes the atv was blowing away and my pants were nearly full of piss. It was so windy it was unbareable and we left and went to hOOters for a few beers. Anyone else have a windy story from 1-19-13? Everyone out fishing in SE Wisconsin last night should.

I was out on Winnebago earlier this year. Had to work a couple hours and then rush up from Milwaukee to meet bassn4evr's crew. The wind was 20-30 mph at my back. So no prob getting out there to the spot. The wind basically pushed me out there in 20 min. When I started, there was snow to walk on. The wind started gusting to 50 mph, and all the snow blew off the lake. Thats when I discovered I had forgot my boot creepers (spikes). When trying to move from spot to spot, my sled and me would slide several feet sideways with every step. I think all of us lost something to the wind that day. Fishing was a bit tough for perch that day. I finally started to get some action at dark. bassn4evrs crew wanted to leave, they had got there hours before me. I told them I would stay behind, to catch some more perch. The walk back was almost impossible with no boot spikes. Sometimes I would get blown back 30- 40 ft on the bare wind-polished ice. Eventually, I made it to the heave at the bay. knowing it was just 3-5 ft deep there, I decided to walk along the rough ice of the heave to get some traction. I had been slip sliding away for an hour already trying to get back. For awhile, made some good progress along the outside of the heave. Then I broke thru with one leg up to the hip. So ok, back out to the glazed ice of the bay, slip sliding away. Made it back to the launch after 1 hr 45 min. , when it took me 20 min to get out. So dont forget your creeper spikes on those windy days!
Same day mentiomed below. I was tending a round Frabil and all of the sudden it starts to blow away. It took off way faster than I could run plus I know better. I have provided a lot of entertainment over the years, to others as, I chased down my stuff. A couple of mile long sprints have occurred with my gear within inches of recovery but always pulling away. In this case the line was still in the hole. I had to hang onto the line and wait until the tip=up hit the end of the spool. After that I worked my way to the tip -up and began the long cold process of rewinding the whole spool. That was a first. Mrt.
Went out earlier this year and right before dark the wind picked up to 20-30 mph with 40 mph winds. Had my 13 year old brother and cousin with and got a kick out of watching them chasing the buckets they had been sitting on halfway across the lake. Had to crawl to move into the wind or you would slide (no snow on the ice). Probably the hardest I've laughed while ice fishing. Just glad I had my car with to drive us back or we would have had a long crawl back to the landing.
Went out with my friend and his 3 year old daughter last year on a windy day with super slick ice. I have a 3 man Pak Shack which we set up. Me and my buddy went to check our tip ups and left his daughter in the shanty. Next thing I hear is "Daddy!" and the sound of the shanty blowing towards the bridge! I caught it about 25 yards later. Lol! She'll be out there with us on Sunday though. (Extra 3 tip-ups hehehe!)
Went out last Friday with 20-30MPH winds (I think the gusts might have been higher) and tried to set up my shanty. I've set it up in the past and had it blown across the lake. This time I was just starting to hoist it up when I invented a new sport.....ice shanty sailing! Had to keep it down and sit on a bucket.
Looking ahead to next weekend, I'm going up LBDN and as of late the wind made nearly impossible to fish(from what I read)so I'll be ready for anything. If ya gotta skip the shelter and plant yer a$$ on a buck that is tied to your leg that's what ya do. I know it's not a report from yesterday but hey, it's fishing in the winter, whataya want?
